E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Keywords: perceptrón, artificial intelligence, neural networks, unmanned vehicle, ATS The article deals with the possibility of using neural networks (NN) in road transport, the advantages and disadvantages of using neural networks, brief description of neural networks – definition and basic elements. The main subject of the article is a description of some applications of neural networks in the road transport and their importance for the efficiency of the transport structures, road safety and the importance of the environment. Article outline: 1. Introduction – Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides tools and allows solving problems in all kinds of transport. 2. Artificial intelligence utilization in transportation. In this part are described possibilities using AI commonly in the transport. Artificial Intelligence (AI) contains ways and means to be used in transportation: neuron nets, AI planning, evolution algorithms, knowing and expert systems, fuzzy logic, multi-agent systems, vector regression, data mining, optimising techniques, etc. That is why AI provides instruments and allows solving problems in each kind of transport and their interaction (air, road, railway and water transport). According to diversity of AI and to its growing usage in this article I am only able to describe neuron networks use in some areas of the road transport. 3. The definition of the artificial neural networks (by Simpson) and basic elements of artificial neural networks – perceptron, feed/forward neural networks. 4. Examples of tasks solvable using artificial neural networks. In this section are described the main areas in which neural nets can be used and why NN are used there. 4.1. The advantages of using NN 4.2. Disadvantages of using neuron nets 5. Description of neural nets applications in a road transport. The following section describes some important and interesting applications of neural networks in road transport and explains NN using in these solutions. 5.1. Driving of unmanned vehicles or computer controlled cars and how will be used the Automatic transport systems. 5.2. Modelling of driver conduct while driving the car – how are used NN in these models. 5.3. Creating models for predicting compliance with road marking drivers. 5.4. Systems to provide recommendations for repair and maintenance of roads and pavements. 5.5. Systems to provide recommendations for repair and maintenance of roads and pavements. 5.6. Systems for recording and classification of vehicles using roadways. 5.7. Transport network analysis 5.8. Route optimisation and forecasting traffic flows. 6. Conclusions Neural networks are used in all areas of transport, their application can occur in almost all systems relating to the management of road traffic, such as automatic transport systems using electrical, computer-controlled vehicles – drone, intelligent transportation systems, intelligent highway systems, logistics transport network and many others.
