Greek Geography
Greece
• Greece is located in southern Europe, bordering the
Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea,
between Albania and Turkey. It is about the size of the
state of Alabama. It has mostly mountains with ranges
extending into the sea as peninsulas or chains of
islands. The climate is mild. Many of the names of its
geographical features come from mythology.
Mount Olympus
• The home of the gods
and goddesses.
• The highest mountain
in Greece.
• The highest peak is
called Mytikas at
9,570 feet.
The Icarian Sea & Island
• The sea gets its name
from the myth of
Daedalus and Icarus.
This is where Icarus
plunged to his death.
• The myth also claims
that Daedalus buried
his son on what is
now called the Icarian
island.
Athens
• Capital of Greece.
• Largest city in
Greece.
• Named after the
Goddess of Wisdom,
Athena.
Aegean Sea
• The Aegean Sea is an
arm of the Mediterranean
Sea, located between the
Greek peninsula and
Anatolia.
• It was said to be named
after King Aegeus who
killed himself in it
because he thought his
son Theseues was killed
by the Minotaur.
Crete
• Largest of the Greek
islands.
• According to myth,
Zeus was born and
King Minos kept the
Minotaur.
Delphi
• City in Greece.
• Location of the temple
of Apollo.
• Apollo first came
there in the form of a
dolphin (womb fish)
with three
priestesses. Delphi
means “womb”.
