Math 106 - Cooley Math For Elementary Teachers II OCC Activity #4 – Classification of Triangles and Quadrilaterals California State Content Standard – Measurement and Geometry for Grade Six 2.0 Students identify and describe the properties of two-dimensional figures: 2.3 Draw quadrilaterals and triangles from given information about them (e.g., a quadrilateral having equal sides but no right angles, a right isosceles triangle). Definitions Triangle - Closed figure composed of exactly 3 line segments, called sides. Right Triangle - A triangle that contains exactly one right angle. Isosceles Triangle - A triangle with two or three sides that are congruent. Equilateral Triangle - A triangle with three sides that are congruent. Scalene Triangle - A triangle that has three different lengths of size. Quadrilateral - Closed figure composed of exactly 4 line segments. Square - A quadrilateral having four congruent sides and four right angles. Rectangle - A quadrilateral having four right angles. Parallelogram - A quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. Kite - A quadrilateral with two non-overlapping pairs of adjacent sides that are congruent. Rhombus - A quadrilateral having four congruent sides. Trapezoid - A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides. Equilateral - Any figure whose sides are congruent. Equiangular - Any figure that has all of its angles congruent. -1- Math 106 - Cooley Math For Elementary Teachers II OCC Activity #4 – Classification of Triangles and Quadrilaterals Exercises: Answer the following statement with Always, Sometimes, or Never. 1) A square is a rectangle. __________ 2) A rhombus is a square. __________ 3) A parallelogram is a rhombus. __________ 4) A parallelogram is a kite. __________ 5) A square is a rhombus. __________ 6) A rectangle is a square. __________ 7) A rectangle is a parallelogram. __________ 8) A rhombus is a parallelogram. __________ 9) A parallelogram is a trapezoid. __________ 10) A parallelogram is a rectangle. __________ 11) An isosceles triangle is an equilateral triangle. __________ 12) An equilateral triangle is an equiangular triangle. __________ 13) An isosceles triangle is a scalene triangle. __________ 14) An equilateral triangle is an isosceles triangle. __________ 15) An equiangular triangle is an equilateral triangle. __________ 16) An isosceles triangle is a right triangle. __________ -2- Math 106 - Cooley Math For Elementary Teachers II OCC Activity #4 – Classification of Triangles and Quadrilaterals Trapezoid Kite Square Rhombus Rectangle Properties Parallelogram Exercises: Place an X in the box if the shape always has the given property. 17) Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel. 18) Both pairs of opposite sides are congruent. 19) Both pairs of opposite angles are congruent. 20) Consecutive angles are supplementary. 21) Diagonals bisect each other. 22) Diagonals are perpendicular. 23) Diagonals are congruent.
