of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at
Emory University School of Medicine in
Atlanta, GA. He received his dental and
medical degrees from Harvard University.

Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. In 1981 he was
appointed Division Director or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
at Columbia University College of Dentistry and Director of
the Presbyterian Hospital Dental Service in New York. During
his twenty three year tenure at Columbia, he was appointed

In 2004 Dr. Roser joined the faculty at Emory. In addition
to his interest in education, since 1991, Dr. Roser has
organized international missions performing surgical repair
of cleft lip/palate deformities. He is currently the Chair of
Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Prior to
relocating to Atlanta, Dr. Roser served on the Board of
NYSSOMS and was Vice President in 2003.

SYNOPSIS
CURRENT PRACTICES
The management of medical diseases has changed as the
result of new diagnostic studies, new medications, and
the incorporation of evidence-based medicine into patient
management. This presentation will use case-based scenarios
to review the current guidelines and recommendations for the
effective surgical and anesthesia management of OMS patients.
Incorporate evidence-based guidelines into the participant’s
practice. Be familiar with the new medications being used
to manage common medical conditions including coronary
vessel disease, hypertension, diabetes, and bleeding problems.

Discuss currently understood guidelines and
recommendations for the safe and effective management
of surgical and anesthesia patients with significant
systemic disease.
Incorporate new evidence-based medical management
guidelines into the management of patients undergoing
office based or hospital anesthesia and surgery.
Become familiar with the use of newer medications for
the treatment of medical conditions in the perioperative
patient.
THE GAP
Evidence-based guidelines for the care of common medical
conditions have become the standard of care. These
guidelines, at times, are delayed in being published in the
literature commonly read by oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
New medications are introduced on a regular basis. Reading
the medical literature to keep current is a daunting task.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
This course is sponsored by the New York State Dental
Association for four and one-half (4.5) hours of mandatory
continuing education.

DESIRED PRACTICES
Surgeons providing full scope of inpatient and outpatient
oral and maxillofacial surgery services will need to provide
perioperative care based on evidence-based guidelines to
patients with concomitant medical conditions. Surgeons, in
addition, need to become familiar with the use of newer
medications for the treatment of medical conditions in the
perioperative patient.
