Dr. Viktória Vargha e-mail:[email protected] 1. Title of the research topic: Preparation of biologically degradable polymers via chemical recycling of PET waste Description of the research topic: Solvolysis of PET waste by using different reagents in order to produce value added products. For the solvolysis different alcohols, acids, and amines are used. The intermediates resulted by solvolysis of PET waste will be characterized by functional group analysis, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thermal analysis (TGA, DSC, DMTA), FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, oscillation rheometry and mechanical investigations. The final products will be pressed into plates and their behaviour will be investigated in compost. By producing biodegradable polymers from PET waste a great contribution is given to the life cycle of the material. 2. Title of the research topic: Synthesis of biologically degradable polymers Description of the research topic: Our aim is the synthesis of biologically degradable polyesters and polyester amides. For this purpose poly(ethylene adipate) (PBA), poly(ethylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(ethylene succinate-adipate) (PBSA) will be synthesized. The effect of other monomers such as cyclohexane dimethanol or terephthalic acid on the properties of polyesters as well as on their biodegradability will be investigated. For preparing polyester amides dicarboxylic acids and different amino-alcohols such as ethanolamine will be used. The synthesized polyesters and polyester amides will be characterized by functional group analysis, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), thermal analysis (TGA, DSC, DMTA), FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, oscillation rheometry and mechanical testing. The final products will be pressed into plates and their behaviour will be investigated in compost. 3. Title of the research topic: Preparation of environmentaly degradable polymer blends Description of the research topic: Natural polymers based on renewable resorces such as thermoplastic starch (TPS), poly lactic acid) (PLA), poly(hydroxyl alcanoate)s (PHB) will be compounded with the newly synthesized biodegradable polyesters and polyester amides. Their compatibility and biodegradability in compost will be tested. The compounds will be investigated by thermal analysis (TGA, DSC, DMTA), oscillation rheometry, digital and polarization optical microscopy (DOM, POM) scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compatibility with standard plastics (LDPE, PET) may also be tested. Microbiological investigations will be carried out in cooperation with Szent István university Gödöllő.
