Solar System Notes: Order of planets from the sun: Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto (dwarf planet) Inner Planets (terrestrial planets): Mercury Venus Earth Mars Rocky Planets These planets are closer to the sun Mercury is the smallest planet and is the closest to the sun. Mars is slightly larger than Mercury Outer Planets (Gas Giants): Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto (dwarf planet) Outer Planets con’t These planets are much father away from the sun. Made of gas, have many rings and moons An asteroid best separates the outer planets from the inner planets. Jupiter is the largest planet. Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet Crater: A crater is a large, bowl-shaped hole found in solid, rocky surfaces Craters can be found on terrestrial planets, moons, and asteroids. Two types of Craters: o Some craters fare formed when material from within the volcano blasted a hole in the top of it’s summit These are called volcanic craters o Some craters are formed when meteoroids, asteroids, or comets smash into the surface of a planet or moon. These are called impact craters The smaller the object that hits, the smaller the crater The larger the object that hits, that larger the crater The slower the speed of the impact the smaller the crater The faster the speed of the impact the larger the crater More craters on a surface tells us the older that area is Planets that have craters keep them due to o No atmosphere o No weather
