Primary sector
Economic activities concerned with agriculture, extraction of raw materials from earth; mining,

Index of income related to GDP. Unlike GDP however, PPP takes into account price differences

Raw material orientation
The tendency of an industry to locate close to its raw materials. Industries may be material
orientated at sub-regional scale but market orientated at a regional scale
Regional multiplier
The stimulation of economic growth by growth itself (ex: As manufacturing industry prospers,
more jobs arise in service industries; secondary to tertiary)
Rostow's "Modernization Model"
A model of economic development that describes a country's progression which occurs in five
stages, transforming them from LDC to MDC
Secondary sector
Economic activities concerned with manufacturing useful products through processing,
transforming, and assembling raw materials
Structural adjustment program
Economic policies imposed on LDCs by international agencies to encourage international trade
(raising taxes, reducing gov. spending, etc.)
Subsistence economy
An economy where enough is grown, hunted, and crafted to provide for the basic needs for
people
Tertiary sector
Economic activities concerned with transportation, communications, and utilities, sometimes
provision of goods/services to people in exchange for payment
Trickle-down effect
terms of political rhetoric that refer to the policy of providing tax cuts or other benefits to
businesses in the belief that this will indirectly benefit the broad population (economic growth
flows down from the top to the bottom)
Value added
Gross value of a product minus cost of raw materials and energy
Gender-related development index (GDI)
Compares the level of development of women with that of both sexes
