THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Animalia Chordata Mammalia Rodentia Muridae Taxon Name: Pseudomys gouldii (Waterhouse, 1839) Common Name(s): • English: Gould's Mouse Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Extinct ver 3.1 Year Published: 2016 Date Assessed: December 31, 2012 Justification: Gould’s Mouse is listed as Extinct as it has not been collected since 1856-57 despite numerous surveys within former range. Previously Published Red List Assessments 2008 – Extinct (EX) – http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2008.RLTS.T18551A8425793.en 1996 – Extinct (EX) 1994 – Extinct (Ex) 1990 – Extinct (Ex) Geographic Range Range Description: This species was endemic to Australia, where it has been reported as living animals, and from subfossil remains, from south-western Western Australia, eastern South Australia, and New South Wales (Dixon 2008). Country Occurrence: Regionally extinct: Australia (New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia) © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Pseudomys gouldii – published in 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2016-1.RLTS.T18551A22398682.en 1 Population The species is extinct. Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) John Gilbert, who collected for John Gould, reported that, at New Norcia, Western Australia, Gould’s Mouse inhabited burrows in ‘small families of from four to eight in number, inhabiting the same burrow, and even the same nest of dried soft grasses’ (Gould 1863). Systems: Terrestrial Threats The reasons for the decline of this species are unclear. However, extinction is likely to have been due to predation by feral cats, habitat degradation by livestock and inappropriate fire regimes. Conservation Actions The species is extinct.
