A Guide to Understanding 3rd-4th Grade Math Geometry Solid Figures A solid figure is a 3 dimensional shape. Cube Square Rectangular Pyramid Prism Sphere Cylinder Cone Polygons A polygon is a closed figure with sides that are all line segments. Each polygon below is identified by the number of sides. Polygon Triangle Number of sides 3 Quadrilateral 4 Pentagon 5 Hexagon 6 Octagon 8 There are 4 different quadrilaterals. Only a square, rhombus and rectangle are parallelograms. Trapezoid Only has one pair of parallel sides Square Has four equal sides and four right angles Parallelograms Rhombus Has four equal sides Rectangle Has four right angles The place where the line segments meet is called an angle or vertex. The angles in a polygon are called vertices. Polygon Number of vertices Triangle 3 Quadrilateral 4 Pentagon 5 Hexagon 6 Octagon 8 Congruent means same shape and same size. Similar means same shape but different size. There are three ways to move a figure without changing its shape or size. Slide (translation) Flip (reflection) Turn (rotation) ► Ι ◄ B→B ▲ ►
