Hardware requirements are subject to change with each
software release.
We also now fully support Terminal Server and Citrix. To operate effectively, SmartPlus requires a
minimum of 4 GB of system RAM for up to six concurrent users. Additionally, a Terminal Server or Citrix
server platform should have at least a 3.2 GHz processor. Using a workstation as a server (i.e., peer-topeer or peer network) is not a supported hardware setup. SmartPlus is 64-bit compliant.

Nielsen designed SmartPlus specifically for Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Windows 7
Professional editions. Nielsen tests and supports versions of Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3, Windows Vista Business/Enterprise/Ultimate, and Windows 7 or Windows 8
Professional/Enterprise/Ultimate. Nielsen does not support non-business versions of Windows
(such as Starter, Home, Home Basic, or Home Premium).

SQL Server Express 2005 and Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 are provided as a courtesy on the
SmartPlus installation CD; however, you will need your original Microsoft install to load Internet
Information Services.

Memory (RAM) is the single most critical factor in setting the performance expectations for the
SmartPlus Suite, especially for workstations with Windows 7. For Windows 7 installations, we
recommend a minimum of 2 GB of RAM. The more RAM, the better the performance.

SmartReports is specifically not supported on any non-Microsoft browser. Reports from
SmartReports that have date ranges greater than three months may experience longer response
times.
The hard disk size depends on how many markets the agency subscribes to and the size of the
database.

SmartPlus 8 and PrintPlus 8 are not compatible with Windows Vista. SmartPlus 9.5 or higher and
PrintPlus 9.0 are not compatible with Windows 2000.

A wireless network connection to the SmartPlus server is not recommended.

SmartReports in a client/server environment requires that Microsoft Internet Information Services
(IIS) be installed and running prior to installation. SmartReports does not require IIS to be installed in
a stand-alone installation.
Built-in limitations of SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition and SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE)
do not allow for the support of the SmartPlus Suite.

SmartPlus does not support Windows Small Business Server 2011 edition.

SmartPlus is only compatible with the Windows Desktop operating systems. Tablet installation is not
supported.
HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS
Your agency’s hardware requirements will vary and may need
to be upgraded based on the number of concurrent users,
database size, and other applications running on the same
hardware. The stated requirements are an ideal starting point
for enjoying the many features and functions in SmartPlus,
PrintPlus, and SmartReports. They are guidelines for ensuring
satisfaction with Nielsen software services in your normal
work routine. Hardware configurations smaller than the
recommended ideal configuration are for smaller databases
with little or no concurrent user access.
SERVER CONSIDERATIONS
SmartPlus 8.x and higher use Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or
higher, or Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition (2005 or
2008). The SmartPlus migration to the new database provides
a more powerful, flexible, and secure database system.
Optimization of the server and the network layer enhances
application software performance.

Agencies with 10 or fewer media buyers and other
concurrent users of SmartPlus and current databases that use
less than 1GB will likely find that Microsoft SQL Server 2005
Express Edition has sufficient capabilities to meet their needs,
provided that their client and server hardware and software,
as well as networking configuration, standards are met.
Agencies with more than 10 media buyers will likely find that
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition does not have
sufficient capabilities to meet their needs. Agencies with
current SmartPlus databases greater than 1GB should select
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Workgroup or Standard Edition,
rather than Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition limitations include:
• Database size restriction to 4 GB. Agencies with
current SmartPlus databases greater than 1GB
should strongly consider using Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Workgroup or Standard Edition, instead of
Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

• Support for only one processor. Agencies with
enterprise-class servers with multiple processors
should consider Microsoft SQL Server 2005.
Always refer to your manufacturers’ and Microsoft’s
recommendations when selecting and configuring
your particular hardware and software
workstation/server combination.
DISK SPACE INFORMATION
SmartPlus consists of three types of files: program and
system files, database files, and ratings data. The space
information for each type is described below:
• Program and system files currently take
approximately 135 MB of disk space and install
locally on each workstation for optimal
performance.
• Database files (agency information) include
all advertisers, inventory, worksheets, orders,
invoices, etc., that the agency adds to SmartPlus. In
a network environment, these files install on the
server. When you update from SmartPlus 5.5
Feature Pack 4.1 or higher to SmartPlus 9.5 or
higher, the database size will increase two to three
times because of the conversion to SQL Server or
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.
Microsoft limits the size of a Microsoft SQL Server
2005 Express Edition database to 4 GB.
• Ratings data size vary by market and survey and
depend on the number of markets and surveys
subscribed to by the agency. Respondent-Level Data
files are larger than the Summary-Data Set. Keeping
older historical data could affect performance when
selecting or changing surveys.
OTHER SOFTWARE
