 Lies in East Africa
 Bordered by Sudan to the N.West ,Ethiopia to the
North ,Somalia to the East ,Uganda to the
West ,Tanzania to the South and the 480km
Indian Ocean coastline to the S.East .
 The country is divided into four regions: the arid
deserts of the north; the savannah lands of the
south; the fertile lowlands along the coast; and
highlands in the west, where the
capital Nairobi is situated.
 Northwest of Nairobi runs the Rift Valley, dotted
with lakes and containing the town of Nakuru,
while further west the Aberdare National Park is
overlooked by Kenya’s highest peak, and Africa’s
second tallest mountain after Mount Kilimanjaro,
Mount Kenya (5,200m/17,000ft), which also is a
national park.
 In the far northwest is Lake Turkana (formerly
Lake Rudolph), and in the southwest is Kenya's
share of Lake Victoria.

HISTORY
Pre-colonial history
Around 2000 BC, Cushitic-speaking people from northern Africa settled in the part of East Africa that is now Kenya.
 The Europeans
Evolving from a mixture of Bantu and Arabic, the Swahili language then developed as a lingua franca for trade
between the different peoples.
Colonial History
The roots of the colonial history of Kenya go back to the Berlin Conference in 1885, when East Africa was first divided
into territories of influence by the European powers.
 Resistance to Colonialism -- the Mau Mau
In 1942, members of the Kikuyu, Embu, Meru and Kamba tribes took an oath of unity and secrecy to fight for freedom
from British rule. The Mau Mau Movement began with that oath and Kenya embarked on its long hard road to
National Sovereignty.
 Kenya achieves independence
In 1962 Kenyatta was released to become Kenya's first Prime Minister, when Kenya finally gained independence on
December 12, 1963. The following year, Kenya became a Republic with Kenyatta as its first President.


Kenya held its Tenth General Election on the 27th of December 2007.
Foreign relations
Kenya has close ties with its fellow neighbours in the African Great Lake region. Relations with
Uganda and Tanzania are generally strong, as the three nations work toward economic and social
integration through common membership. Kenya has good relations with. the United Kingdom.
Kenya is one of the most pro-American nations in Africa, and the wider world.
 Administrative divisions
Kenya is divided into 47 semi-autonomous counties that are headed by governors. These 47
counties now form the first-order divisions of Kenya.

PEOPLE
 The population of Kenya is 44 million people.
 Kenya has the 31st largest population in the world.
 Kenyans can vote once they reach 18 years of age.
 Life expectancy at birth is 62 years for males and 65 years for females.
 22% of people live in towns and cities and 78% live in the country.
 The average family has 4 children.
The rate of obesity in Kenya is very low. Only 4.2% of people are obese.
 The people of Kenya are on average, very young. 60% of the people are aged 0-24.

 Official languages are English and Swahili.

FLORA AND FAUNA





Kenya is a popular safari destination where people go to see animals in
the wild.
The big five are the most popular animals to see on safari. They are the
leopard, lion, buffalo, rhino and elephant.
The cheetah is the fastest animal in Kenya.
Kenya has over 100 types of birds.
There are 110 different types of bats found in Kenya.
ECONOMY
Human Development Index (HDI) of 0.519, ranked 145 out of 186 in the world.
 Kenya is East and Central Africa's hub for financial services. The Nairobi Securities
Exchange (NSE) is ranked 4th in Africa in terms of market capitalization.
 Tourism is Kenya's largest foreign exchange earning sector.
 Agriculture is the second largest contributor to Kenya's gross domestic product (GDP),
after the service sector. Tea, coffee, sisal, pyrethrum, corn, and wheat are grown in the
fertile highlands, one of the most successful agricultural production regions in Africa.
Kenya is the world's 3rd largest exporter of cut flowers.
 Industrial activity, concentrated around the three largest urban centres, Nairobi,
Mombasa and Kisumu is dominated by food-processing industries such as grain milling,
beer production, and sugarcane crushing, and the fabrication of consumer goods, e.g.,
vehicles from kits.
 Vision 2030 an economic development program it hopes will put the country in the same
league as the Asian Economic Tigers by the year 2030.

