Kinetic and Potential Energy Study Guide
Potential Energy-energy that is stored up based on position.
There are three types of potential energy:
1. Gravitational potential energy-energy that is stored up above the
middle of the earth or based on height above ground.
2. Chemical potential energy-energy that is stored in the chemical
bonds of like molecules and compounds. This type of energy is also
found in the nucleus of an atom.
3. Elastic potential energy-energy stored up by stretching an object
from its original position.
Examples of potential energy:
1. The energy stored in a hamburger that you eat. (chemical energy)
2. The energy stored when you pull back a compound bow and hold it
while you aim your arrow. (elastic energy)
3. Sitting in a tree. (gravitational potential energy)
Kinetic Energy-energy that comes from motion. (If an object is in motion, it
has kinetic energy.
Types of kinetic energy:
1. Heat energy
2. Geothermal energy
3. Electrical energy
4. Solar(sun) energy
5. Hydroelectric energy
6. Wind energy
Examples of kinetic energy:
1. A roller coaster moving down a hill.
2. A skydiver falling from a plane.
3. A bullet shot from a gun.
4. A bowling ball moving down the lane.
