Ch 10-2: Sexual Reproduction & Meiosis
1.) Sexual Reproduction - the joining of 2 sex cells (egg &
sperm) which create new organisms
2.) Sperm - male sex cells
3.) Egg - female sex cells
4.) Fertilization - the joining of the egg and sperm, which forms a
zygote
5.) Zygote - a diploid cell formed when sex cells join
6.) Diploid - a cell with pairs of chromosomes
 Body cells are diploid
 Think of: D for doubled and diploid
 Ex: human body cells have 46 chromosomes
7.) Haploid - cells with half the number of chromosomes as body
cells
 Think of: H for half and haploid
 Ex: Humans sex cells have 23 chromosomes
8.) Meiosis- process that produces 4 haploid (sex) cells
 Ensures offspring will have the same number of
chromosomes as the parent
Study Tips for Meiosis:
1. Mitosis = my “toe” is a part of my body and mitosis makes body
cells (diploid cells)
2. Meiosis = forms sex cells, “Me” was formed through sexual
reproduction (haploid cells)
3. Diploid = double the number of chromosomes (body cells)
4. Haploid = half the number of chromosomes (sex cells)
