The story…..
In the spring of her freshman year at Nova High School in Davie, Florida, Rebecca “Becca” Kirtman launched a dress drive to
provide prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who could not afford to purchase them. Rebecca was a passionate,
bright, fun-loving young woman who loved being with her friends and felt that no one should miss a high school event
because they couldn’t afford to be there. She saw the inequity in the situation and sought to change things. During the spring
of her sophomore year, Becca singlehandedly collected and donated more than 250 formal dresses and helped hundreds of
South Florida girls attend their high school proms in style. Rebecca, a 16-year-old cheerleader, honor student and caring
young woman, passed away in a tragic automobile accident on August 20, 2003.
Becca’s Closet is a volunteer-led national nonprofit organization that memorializes Rebecca’s project. Becca’s Closet chapter
volunteers throughout the U.S. collect and donate formal dresses to high school girls with financial need.
Becca’s Closet Scholarships memorialize Becca’s contributions to the community by honoring other young people who have
made a difference in the world.

The scholarships….
Becca’s Closet awards 3 types of non-renewable scholarships. The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage students who have
demonstrated outstanding community service in high school to continue their efforts throughout their lives and to inspire others to do
the same.
Read the scholarship descriptions below to determine which scholarship you are eligible to apply for.
Spirit of Community Scholarship: Award: Varies
Eligibility:
 Graduating high school senior anywhere in the United States
 Minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale
 Demonstrated financial need – all pages of 2023-2024 FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) required (www.fafsa.gov)
 Have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his/her local community through service to his/her local
community through volunteer service of any kind.
 Will attend a regionally-accredited 2- or 4-year college/university or technical/vocational institution in fall of 2023
 US Citizen, legal resident
Becca’s Closet Involvement Scholarship for Becca’s Closet Involvement: Minimum Award: $1,000
Eligibility:
 Graduating high school senior
 Minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale
 Must have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his or her local community through the creation of
and or involvement in a Becca’s Closet chapter or Becca’s Closet organized through a supporting organization.
 Will attend a regionally-accredited 2- or 4-year college/university or technical institution in fall of 2023.
 US Citizen, legal resident
Becca’s Closet Drittel Family Scholarship for Becca’s Closet Involvement: Minimum Award: $1,000
Eligibility:
 Graduating high school senior in Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach Counties, Florida
 Minimum 2.0 unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale
 Must have made an outstanding, documented contribution to his or her local community through the creation of
and or involvement in a Becca’s Closet chapter or Becca’s Closet organized through a supporting organization.
 Will attend a regionally-accredited 2- or 4-year college/university or technical/vocational institution in fall of 2023
 US Citizen, legal resident

1. Two (2) letters of recommendation on official letterhead, including contact information:
 1 from an adult sponsor/representative of nonprofit organization detailing applicant’s involvement and contributions
Sponsor may not be the parent/guardian of applicant.
 1 from a school faculty member describing student’s character, achievements, projects and community involvement
*Adult sponsor and/or faculty member will be contacted for confirmation and additional information.
2. Sealed Official High School Transcript
3. Essay: Rebecca Kirtman was committed to her community. She identified a need and devised a way to address it. Describe in detail
the need that you have addressed in your community. Help us to understand the impact you personally have had on your community.
