Shaykh al-Buti’s � introduction to the ‘Wird al-Nawawi �
Before us today there are many litanies of these righteous people. However
I have selected from all of these for you the litany (hizb) of the great Imam,
in whom there was gathered profuse knowledge along with utmost taqwa of
Allah . An Imam who dedicated all of his life in the path of Allah  in
knowledge, action, abstention (zuhd), remembrance, service to the generality
of the Muslims and giving sincere advice to their Imam’s.
This great Imam had a litany consisting of supplication, invocation and
prayer that he would recite daily along with his other litanies which was
his habit. This litany of his was met with widespread acceptance from the
scholars and Imams after him till this day. They recite it every morning, and
its reflects in their heart the radiance of tawhid, the familiarity of intimate
supplication (munajat) and pleasure in the slavehood of humility to Allah .
So make a firm resolve to be regular in its recitation every morning with
the attention of the mind and humility of the heart, and this is after your
completing the invocations which I advised you with.
It is from the prayers (ibtihalat) proven for the relief of distress and repelling of the plots of the oppressors…I will not lengthen the commentary, for I
have personally experienced the blessing of this litany. For its light has grown
in my heart, and I have witnessed many of its effects in my life.
He is Imam Yahya bin Sharaf al-Nawawi who passed away in the year (676
Hijri). It is my conviction that if this Imam was not from the great godly
righteous friends of Allah , then Allah  does not have on the earth any
friends after him. Our discussion will become lengthy if I entered into the
mentioning of his biography and unveiling of his unique states, excellences
(manaqib) and qualities. However it is sufficient for you to know that the
Imam, Ali bin Abdullah al-Kafi al-Subki, the father of Taj al-in al-Subki,
author of ‘Tabaqat al-Shafiyyah’ -and he is well known for his immense virtues and vast knowledge-came from Cairo to Damascus intending the ‘Dar
al-Hadith’ to visit Imam al-Nawawi, as he (Allah have mercy on him) was
resident there.

It was said to him (al-Subki) that he (al-Nawawi) had departed for his home
place of Nawa. He then passed away there after falling ill for a few days. So
he (al-Subki) asked for the place where he (al-Nawawi) used to sit, when they
pointed it out to him Imam al-Subki placed his head on the ground of that
place and covered his cheek and face with dust on it saying:
And in Dar al-Hadith there is a subtle meaning
On carpets where I incline and take refuge:
Perhaps I might touch with my very face
A spot touched by al-Nawawi’s foot.
It has reached me that there are people who doubt, or raise doubts regarding
the ascription of this litany (hizb) to Imam al-Nawawi without reliance upon
any research or verification of the matter. Here I present before those and
their likes the continuous chain for the receiving of this noble litany, reaching
to its author Imam al-Nawawi, Allah the most High haver mercy on him and
be pleased with him. Imam Umar al-Shabrawi said in the introduction of his
commentary on this litany:
I received it from our Sheikh, Allamah Muhammad al-Sibaiee, and he
from his father Allamah al-Sayyid Salih al-Sibaiee, and he from Allamah
al-Sheikh al-Dardir, and he from his teacher Sheikh al-Hifni,and he from
his teacher Sheikh Mustafa al-Bakri, and he from Sheikh Muhammad bin
Ahmad al-Dimyati al-Shafi better known as Ibn al-Mayit al-Budairi, and he
from Sheikh al-Shibramallasi, and he from Sheikh Allamah Abd al-Rahim
al-Iraqi, from Sheikh Ala al-Din Ibn al-Attar, and he from the Qutb: Yahya
al-Nawawi- Allah be pleased with him”.

I seek refuge in Allah from the
accursed Satan. In the Name of
Allah, the Most Compassionate,
the Most Merciful.

‫ اَلل ُه‬،ِ‫َألْ َف َألْ ِف بِ ْس ِم الّٰله‬
ْ ‫ اَلل ُه َأ‬،‫كب َُر‬

‫أ ُق ْو ُل َعلٰى نَ ْف ِس ْى َو َعلٰى ِديْنِ ْى َو َعلٰى‬
‫َأ ْهلِى َو َعلٰى َأ ْو َلا ِدىْ َو َعلٰى مَ الِ ْى‬
َ
َ
‫َو َعلٰى أ ْصح َِاب ْى َو َعلٰى أ ْديَانِهِ ْم َو َعلٰى‬
‫َأمْ َوالِ ِه ْم ۞ َألْ َف َألْ ِف َلا حَ ْو َل‬
۞ ‫َو َلا ُق َّو َة إِ َّلا بِالّٰلهِ ال َعلِ ّ ِى الع َِظ ْي ِم‬
One thousand thousand ‘In
the name of Allah, Allah
is the greatest, Allah is the
greatest, Allah is the greatest’,
I say upon myself, upon my
religion, upon my family,
upon my children, upon my
property, upon my companions,
upon their religion, and upon
their property. One thousand
thousand ‘There is no strength
nor power except by Allah, the
High, the Most Great.’
،ِ‫ َو ِم َن الّٰله‬،ِ‫ َوبِالّٰله‬،ِ‫بِ ْس ِم الّٰله‬
،ِ‫ َوفِ ْى الّٰله‬،ِ‫ َو َعلٰى الّٰله‬،ِ‫َو ِإلَى الّٰله‬
‫َو َلا حَ ْو َل َو َلا ُق َّو َة إِ َّلا بِالّٰل ِه الْ َعلِ ّ ِى‬
‘In the name of Allah’, and
with Allah, and from Allah, and
towards Allah, and upon Allah,
and in Allah – there is no power
and no strength except with
Allah, the Exalted, the Mighty.
۞ ‫الع َِظ ْي ِم‬
‘In the name of Allah’, upon my
religion, upon myself, and upon
my children. ‘In the name of
Allah’, upon my property and
upon my family. ‘In the name
of Allah’, upon every thing my
Sustainer has given me.

‫بِ ْس ِم الّٰل ِه َعلٰى ِديْنِ ْى َو َعلٰى نَ ْف ِس ْى‬
ِ‫َو َعلٰى َأ ْو َلا ِدىْ ۞ بِ ْس ِم الّٰله‬
۞ ‫َعلٰى مَ ا ِل ْى َو َعلٰى َأ ْهلِ ْى‬
ُ ‫بِ ْس ِم الّٰلهِ َعلٰى‬
‫ك ِّل َش ْى ٍء‬
۞ ‫َأ ْع َطان ِ ْي ِه َر ِبّ ْى‬
In the name of Allah, Sustainer
of the seven heavens, Lord of
the seven earths, and Lord of
the mighty throne.
ِ ‫السم ََاو‬
‫الس ْب ِع‬
َّ ‫ات‬
َّ ‫بِ ْس ِم الّٰلهِ َر ِّب‬
‫الس ْب ِع َو َر ِّب‬
َّ ‫َو َر ِّب ْال َأ َر ِضي َْن‬
۞ ‫الع َْر ِش الع َِظ ْي ِم‬
‫بِ ْس ِم الّٰلهِ َّال ِذىْ َلا يَ ُض ُّر مَ َع ْاسمِ ِه‬
َ
‫السمَا ِء‬
َّ ‫ض َوَلا ِفى‬
ِ ‫َش ْي ٌء ِفى ْالأ ْر‬
In the name of Allah, in whose
name no harm can be done
on the earth and heaven, and
He is the All-hearing and Allknowing. (x3)
۞ )x3( ‫الس ِم ْي ُع ال َعلِ ْي ُم‬
َّ ‫َو ُه َو‬
‫بِ ْس ِم الّٰلهِ َخيْ ِر ْال َأ ْسمَا ِء فِ ْى‬
َ
‫ ۞ بِ ْس ِم‬،‫السمَا ِء‬
َّ ‫ض َوفِى‬
ِ ‫ْالأ ْر‬
۞ ‫الّٰلهِ َأفْ َتت ُِح َوب ِ ِه َأ ْخ َتت ُِم‬
‫ اَلل ُه ۞ اَلل ُه َر ِبّ ْى َلا‬،ُ‫ اَلله‬،ُ‫اَلله‬
ُ ‫ُأ ْش ِر‬
،ُ‫ اَلله‬،ُ‫ك بِ ِه َش ْي ًئا ۞ اَلله‬
‫اَلل ُه ۞ اَلل ُه َر ِبّ ْى َلا ِإل ٰ َه ِإ َّلا الّٰله‬
ْ ‫۞ اَلل ُه َأ َع ُّز َو َأجَ ُّل َو َأ‬
‫كب َُر‬
ُ ‫ِممَّا َأ َخ‬
۞ ‫اف َو َأحْ َذ ُر‬
In the name of Allah, the best
of names in the earth and in the
heavens. In the name of Allah
I commence, and I end with
it. Allah, Allah, Allah. Allah is
my Sustainer,. I associate no
partners with Him. Allah, Allah,
Allah. Allah is my Sustainer.
There is no god but Him. Allah
is more mighty, glorious, and
greater than what I fear and
guard against.

َ ِ‫ب‬
‫ك اللّٰه َُّم َأ ُع ْو ُذ ِم ْن َش ّ ِر‬
‫ َو ِم ْن‬، ْ‫ َو ِم ْن َش ّ ِر َغيْ ِرى‬،‫نَ ْف ِس ْى‬
،‫َش ّ ِر مَ ا َخلَ َق َر ِبّ ْى َو َذ َر َأ َوبَ َر َأ‬
َ ِ‫۞ وب‬
‫ك اللّٰه َُّم َأحْ تَ ِر ُز‬
َ ِ‫ َوب‬،‫ِم ْنه ُْم‬
‫ك اللّٰه َُّم َأ ُع ْو ُذ ِم ْن‬
َ ِ‫ َوب‬،‫ُش ُر ْو ِر ِه ْم‬
‫ك اللّٰه َُّم َأ ْد َر ُأ‬
َّ‫ َو ُأ َق ّ ِد ُم بَي َْن ي ََدى‬،‫فِ ْى ُنح ُْو ِر ِه ْم‬
َ
‫الر ْحم ِٰن‬
َّ ِ‫ (بِ ْس ِم الّٰله‬:‫َوأي ِْديْ ِه ْم‬
‫ اَلّٰل ُه‬،‫ ُق ْل ُه َو الّٰل ُه َأحَ ٌد‬،‫الر ِح ْي ِم‬
َّ
‫ َولَ ْم‬،‫ لَ ْم يَل ِ ْد َولَ ْم يُ ْو َل ْد‬،‫الصَّ م َُد‬
ُ ‫ك ْن َل ُه‬
ُ َ‫ي‬
)x3( )‫ك ْف ًوا َأحَ ٌد‬
In You, O Allah, I seek refuge
from the evil of my self and
the evil of others, and the evil
that my Sustainer has created,
multiplied, and fashioned.
With You O Allah, do I guard
against them. In You, O Allah,
I take refuge against their evils.
And with You, O Allah, I ward
off their harm. I put forward
(as a protection) before myself:
In the Name of Allah, the Most
Compasionate, the Most Merciful.
Say: He is Allah the One! Allah
the Eternal, the Absolute. He
was not born nor nor does He
give birth. And there is nothing
like him. [112:1-4] (x3)
َ ِ‫۞ َو ِمثْ َُل ٰذل‬
‫ك َع ْن َيمِ ْينِ ْى‬
َ ِ‫ َو ِمثْ َُل ٰذل‬،‫َو َأ ْيمَانِهِ ْم‬
‫ك َع ْن‬
‫ َو ِمثْ َُل‬،‫َِشـ َمالِ ْى َو َع ْن َشـ َمائِلِ ِه ْم‬
َ ِ‫ٰذل‬
‫ َو ِمثْ َُل‬،‫ك َأمَ ا ِم ْى َو َأمَ ا َمه ُْم‬
And the same to my right and
to their right; and the same to
my left and to their left; and the
same in front of me and in front
of them; and the same behind
me and behind them; and the
same above me and above
them; and the same beneath
me and beneath them; and the
same surrounding
me and
َ ِ‫ٰذل‬
،‫ك ِم ْن َخلْ ِف ْى َو ِم ْن َخلْفِ ِه ْم‬

َ ِ‫َو ِمثْ َُل ٰذل‬
‫ك ِم ْن فَ ْوقِ ْى َو ِم ْن‬
َ ِ‫ َو ِمثْ َُل ٰذل‬،‫فَ ْوقِ ِه ْم‬
‫ك ِم ْن َت ْحتِ ْى‬
َ ِ‫ َو ِمثْ َُل ٰذل‬،‫َو ِم ْن َت ْحتِهِ ْم‬
‫ك‬
۞ ‫ُم ِح ْي ٌط ِب ْى َوبِ ِه ْم‬
surrounding them.
َ ُ‫َاللّٰه َُّم ِإ ِنّ ْى َأ ْس َأل‬
‫ك ِل ْى َولَه ُْم‬
َ ‫ك بِ َخيْ ِر‬
َ ‫ِم ْن َخيْ ِر‬
‫ك َّال ِذىْ َلا‬
َ ‫ِك ُه َغي ُْر‬
ُ ‫َيمْل‬
‫ َاللّٰه َُّم اجْ عَلْنِ ْى‬،‫ك‬
O Allah, I ask You , I beseech
You, through Your Goodness,
for me and for them, from Your
Goodness which no one other
than You possess.
O Allah! Place them and
me under Your Protection
and guard; and among Your
Dependants and in Your
Proximity; under our Security
and Trust; among Your Party
and in Your Sanctuary, Shelter,
Care and Benevolence – from
every demon and sultan; human
or jinn; from tyrants and
enviers; from predatory beasts,
serpents and scorpions; and
from the evil of every crawling
creature which is under Your
control. Indeed, my Lord is on
the straight path.
َ ‫ك َو ِع َيا ِذ‬
َ ‫و ِإيَّا ُه ْم فِ ْى ِع َبا ِد‬
‫ك‬
َ ِ‫ك َو ِح ْزب‬
َ ِ‫ك َو َأمَ ان‬
َ ‫َو ِج َوا ِر‬
‫ك‬
َ ‫ك َنف‬
َ ‫ك َو‬
َ ‫َو ِح ْر ِز‬
‫ِك ِم ْن َش ّ ِر‬
ُ
‫ك ِّل َش ْي َطانٍ َو ُسلْ َطانٍ َو ِإن ْ ٍس‬
‫َاغ َوحَ ِاس ٍد َو َس ُب ٍع‬
ٍّ َ‫َوج‬
ٍ ‫ان َوب‬
ُ ‫ َو ِم ْن َش ّ ِر‬،‫َوحَ َّي ٍة َو َع ْق َر ٍب‬
‫ك ِّل‬
ِ ‫َدابَّ ٍة َأنْ َت‬
‫ إِ َّن‬،‫َاص َيتِهَا‬
ِ ‫آخ ٌذ بِن‬
ٍ ‫َر ِّب ْى َعلٰى صِ َر‬
۞ ‫اط مُّ ْس َت ِق ْي ٍم‬

،‫ِم َن الْم َْربُ ْوبِي َْن‬
،‫ِم َن الْم َْخلُ ْوقِي َْن‬
،‫مَ َن الْم َْر ُز ْوقِي َْن‬
The Creator suffices me from
the created. The Sustainer
suffices me from those who
are sustained. The Concealer
suffices me from those who are
concealed. The Giver of Victory
suffices me from those who are
granted victory. The Vanquisher
suffices me from those who are
vanquished. The One who is
sufficient for me suffices me.
He who never ceases sufficing
me, suffices me. My Lord
suffices me and He is the best
of Guardians. Allah suffices me
from His entire creation.
‫الر ُّب‬
َّ
‫ال َخالِ ُق‬
‫الرا ِز ُق‬
َّ
‫حَ ْس ِب َى‬
‫حَ ْس ِب َى‬
‫حَ ْس ِب َى‬
، َ‫السات ُِر ِم َن الْم َْس ُت ْو ِريْن‬
َ ‫حَ ْس ِب َى‬
، َ‫حَ ْس ِب َى ال َّناصِ ُر ِم َن الْ َم ْنصُ ْو ِريْن‬
، َ‫حَ ْس ِب َى الْ َقا ِه ُر ِم َن الْم َْقه ُْو ِريْن‬
، ‫حَ ْس ِب َى َّال ِذىْ ُه َو حَ ْس ِب ْى‬
،‫حَ ْس ِب ْى مَ ْن لَ ْم يَ ْزَل حَ ْس ِب ْى‬
ِ ‫الو‬
،‫ك ْي ُل‬
َ ‫حَ ْس ِب َى الّٰل ُه َونِع َْم‬
‫حَ ْس ِب َى الّٰل ُه ِم ْن َج ِم ْي ِع َخلْ ِق ِه‬
َّ َ ‫(إِ َّن َولِ ِّي َـى الّٰل ُه َّال ِذىْ ن‬
‫ـــز َل‬
Verily, Allah is my protector,
and supporter who sent down
the Book, and He protects the
righteous. [7:196]
‫اب َو ُه َو يَتَ َـولَّى‬
ِ ْ‫ال‬
َ ‫ك َت‬
ِ ‫الص‬
َ ‫ـــال ِح‬
۞ )‫ين‬
َّ
‫جَ عَلْ َنا‬
‫يُ ْؤ ِم ُن ْو َن‬
And when you (O Muhammad)
recite the Qur’an, We erect
between you and those who do
not believe in the Hereafter, an
invisible barrier. We put veils

َ ‫َ(و ِإ َذا َق َرْأ َت الْ ُقر‬
‫آن‬
َ ‫بَ ْي َن‬
‫ك َوبَي َْن َّال ِذيْنَ َلا‬
ِ ِ‫ب‬
‫الآخ َر ِة ِح َجابًا مَّ ْس ُت ْو ًرا ۞ َوجَ عَلْ َنا‬
ِ ‫َعلٰى ُقلُ ْوبِ ِه ْم َأ‬
‫ك َّن ًة َأن يَ ْف َقه ُْو ُه‬
َ ‫ َوإِ َذا َذ‬،‫َوفِ ْى َآذانِهِ ْم َو ْقر ًا‬
‫ك ْر َت‬
over their hearts to prevent
them from understanding it,
and We afflict their ears with
deafness so that they do not
hear; and when you mention
your One and Only Lord in the
recitation of the Qur’ān, they
become averse to Him, and
turn their backs. [17:45]
َ َّ‫َرب‬
‫ك ِفى الْ ُق ْرآنِ َوحْ َد ُه َولَّ ْو ْا َعلٰى‬
۞ )‫َأ ْدبَا ِر ِه ْم نُ ُف ْو ًرا‬
‫(فَ ِإ ْن تَ َولَّ ْو ْا فَ ُق ْل حَ ْس ِب َى الّٰل ُه َلا‬
َّ ‫ َعلَ ْي ِه تَ َو‬،‫إِلٰـ َه إِ َّلا ُه َو‬
‫ك ْل ُت‬
)‫يم‬
ِ ‫َو ُه َو َر ُّب الْع َْر ِش الْع َِظ‬
But if they turn away, say: Allāh
is sufficient for me. There is no
god but He. In Him do I put my
trust and He is the Lord of the
Mighty Throne!” [9:129] (7 x)
There is no power nor strength
except with Allah, the Exalted,
the Most Great. (x3).
And
may the Blessings and Peace
of Allāh be upon our master
Muḥammad, the unlettered
Prophet, and upon his family
and his Companions. I onceal
myself within the coffers of
‘through the name of Allah’.
Its locks are my trust in Allāh.
Its keys are ‘there is no power
except by Allah’. Through You,
O Allah, I protect myself from
what lies within my power
and what lies without. Created
creatures are powerless [when
‫) ۞ َو َلا حَ ْو َل َو َلا ُق َّو َة إِ َّلا‬x7(

‫َوصَ لَى الّٰل ُه َعلٰى َس ِّي ِدنَا مُحمَ ٍد َو َعلٰى‬
‫آلِهِ َو َص ْح ِب ِه َو َس َّل َم ۞ َخ َب ْأ ُت‬
،ِ‫نَ ْف ِس ْى فِ ْى َخ َزائ ِِن بِ ْس ِم الّٰله‬
‫ مَ َفات ِ ْيحُ هَا‬،ِ‫َأ ْق َفالُهَا ثِ َقتِ ْى بِالّٰله‬
َ ِ‫ ُأ َدافِ ُع ب‬،ِ‫َلا ُق َّو َة إِ َّلا بِالّٰله‬
‫ك‬

‫اللّٰه َُم َع ْن نَ ْف ِس ْى مَ ا ُأ ِط ْي ُق َومَ ا‬
‫ َلا َط َاق َة لِم َْخلُ ْو ٍق مَ َع‬،‫َلا ُأ ِط ْي ُق‬
faced] with the ability of the
Creator.
ْ ‫ُق ْد َر ِة‬
۞ ‫ال َخالِ ِق‬
ِ ‫حَ ْس ِب َى الّٰل ُه َونِع َْم الْ َو‬
،‫ك ْي ُل‬
‫َو َلا حَ ْو َل َو َلا ُق َّو َة ِإ َّلا بِالّٰلهِ ال َعلِ ّ ِى‬
My sufficiency is Allah, and
what a great agent is He! There
is no strength nor power except
by Allah, the High, the Most
Great. And may the prayers
of Allah be upon our master
Muḥammad and upon his folk
and Companions, and give
them peace. (x3)
‫ َوصَ لَّى الّٰل ُه َعلٰى َس ِّي ِدنَا‬،‫الع َِظ ْي ِم‬
)x3( ‫مُح َ َّم ٍد َو َعلٰى آلِ ِه َو َص ْح ِب ِه َو َس َّل َم‬
Then the supplicant blows lightly
without spitting; to his right (3
times), to his left (3 times), in
front of him (3 times), and behind
him (3 times).
