PART A: READING COMPREHENSION (15 MARKS)
Read the passage below and answer all the questions that follow.
Cycling: A Growing Trend
I
Over the past decade, a growing interest in cycling in Sweden, Denmark and
Norway have increased spectacularly. It is no longer reserved for professionals or
exercise junkies; the sport is now being taken up by all kinds of people and for all
kinds of reasons. The statistics speak for themselves. For instance, over the last
four years in Sweden, sales of all types of bicycles have increased by about 20
5
percent. According to the bicycle industry statistics, around 598,000 bicycles were
sold last year. Other than Sweden, cycling is also an important daily activity in
Denmark due to its flat terrain. In other countries like Norway, interest in cycling
has heightened rapidly in the last 10 years and it is now stronger than ever. The
beautiful Norwegian mountains attract, in particular, cyclists for mountain biking
10
and off-road biking. There are many different reasons for the increasing popularity
of cycling.
II
The main reason would be due to the quality of the materials and components of
the bicycles which are constantly improved and upgraded. Although over the
years there have been such oddities as bamboo and plastic frames, the current
15
road bikes are now made of one or blends of these four materials: steel,
aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber. But first, notice that high-quality bicycles are
built of all these materials. Two bikes can also be constructed of the same
material yet have entirely different ride qualities due to differences in geometry,
assembly, and material manipulation, which is one of the reasons why it is so
20
important to test ride and feel the bikes before thinking of buying.
III
Another reason for cycling is the increased interest in both the environment and in
personal health and well-being. The climate is usually mentioned as one of the
reasons for the cycling trend, as it has become warmer in these countries where
the cycling season continues to a prolonged period of time. Apart from that,
25
modernisation also seems to be playing a role for the growing trend. Traffic

congestion especially in larger cities, encourages people to bike in the morning
and get some fresh air instead of sitting still in traffic jams.
IV
Moreover, various industrial bodies in these countries have launched initiatives to
encourage more people to discover cycling, both as a sport and as a form of
30
exercise. It is no longer acceptable to treat cycling as a third-class mode of
transportation. The rising popularity of cycling as a sport can be seen in the
increasing number of races that are taking place, especially for mountain bikes
and road bikes. For example, the world’s largest recreational cycling race, the
Vätternrundan race, is now fully booked within a few minutes, compared to its
35
previous opening where they had been available for months.
V
The trend of cycling is also growing among females. For example, a Swedish
Olympian cyclist, Susanne Ljungskog, founded Team Sky Blue to inspire and
encourage female cyclists of all levels to bike on the roads. She believes that
more and more women are now involved in cycling partly because there are more
40
forums and venues than in the past which makes them equal to the males. She
also emphasizes that cycling is a gentle form of exercise, particularly in
comparison to running, and that the risk of injury is small. Therefore, it makes a
suitable sport for women.
VI
Another former professional cyclist, Thor Hushovd, supports the increasing
45
popularity of cycling. The Norwegian Cyclist Champion explains that in previous
years, people would be waiting for winter to practice sports, yet now, they can
practice sports such as cycling as early as spring. This clearly shows a shift in
people’s attitudes towards sports. Hushovd also believes that the social aspect of
cycling, which is in groups, is what makes it attractive. Cycling in groups provides
50
social connectedness that is lacking in many other sports. In this way, one is able
to experience a great deal of exercising while socialising with others. Therefore,
cycling is definitely a significant trend that contributes to physical and emotional
health.

PART C: READING COMPREHENSION (20 MARKS)
Read the passage below and answer all the questions that follow.
What is Aromatherapy?
I
Essential oils are oils, typically fragrant ones, that have been extracted from
the roots, flowers, leaves, or seeds of plants using steam or applied pressure.
The word “essential” refers to the fact that the oil contains the “essence” of the
plant; the natural chemicals that provide a distinct odour or flavour. In the
practice of aromatherapy, these aromatic essential oils are generally used to
5
improve the health of the body, mind and spirit. These aromatic oils work
through the sense of smell and skin absorption; applied to the skin, smelled,
dabbed on a pillow or dropped in a bath, or even heated for the aroma to be
dispersed into the air. Additionally, there are many soaps and lotions that are
made of essential oils and used as aromatherapy products.
II
10
The use of essential oils is cross-cultural and is believed to dates back
thousands of years ago. This relates to the story of frankincense oil being
offered as one of the gifts of the Priests. These oils were initially used for
medical and religious purposes as they were known to have both physical and
psychological benefits. Even if you have not purchased an essential oil roller
15
or diffuser, chances are you may have used them anyway. Vick’s VapoRub,
typically rubbed on the chest as a cough suppressant, contains essential
eucalyptus, cedar leaf, and nutmeg oils suspended in petroleum jelly. Thus,
the use of these aromatic essential oils in our daily life is common.
III
The National Institute of Health has reported a thorough summary on the
20
efficacy of essential oils based on a research conducted by the National
Library of Medicine. Currently, there is no evidence or research showing any
illnesses that can be cured through the use of essential oils or the practice of
aromatherapy. Instead, there are other possible benefits of essential oils. For
example, essential oils are known to be mood elevators or stress relievers,
25
but most are still inconclusive.

However, research has shown the positive outcome in using essential oils for
IV
dementia. Apart from drinking a tablespoon of fish oil every day, one of the
scientific studies revealed positive results for essential oils involving patients
with dementia. According to a study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, using
30
balm from lemon oil extract reduces agitation in patients with dementia. There
are also other proven success stories of essential oils, such as the treatment
of acne with tea tree oil and the treatment of hair loss with oils like thyme,
rosemary, lavender and cedarwood.
Other than that, past studies on essential oils found in citrus fruits is
V
35
particularly intriguing due to their natural antibacterial qualities. For example,
citrus oil when combined with Dead Sea salts has shown to inhibit bacterial
growth in mice and act as an anti-inflammatory agent. The citrus essential oil,
bergamot, is known to help fight the growth of common causes of food
poisoning like listeria, e-coli, and staphylococcus.
40
Nonetheless, most of these studies have not yet extended to clinical trials
VI
which means that there is still much work required before essential oils would
be potentially prescribed by physicians. Given the strong public interest in
essential oils, other medicines have so far failed to treat illnesses such as
migraines, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and memory lost. More research into the
45
possible benefits of essential oils for well-being is clearly worthwhile despite
few side effects associated with the use of essential oils. For instance, the
estrogen-like effects noted for lavender and tea tree oils have been linked
to breast enlargement in pre-pubescent boys when applied over long periods
of time.
50
VII
Hence, if you are looking for stress relief therapy, adding a few drops of
diluted essential oils to a warm bath as a complementary therapy will do no
harm. However, if you have a serious health condition, seeking help from your
healthcare practitioner is highly encouraged.
