PERSONAL PRONOUN Material Required: Chart (Impressionistic language charts) – 6. Display: It is displayed along with the other materials in the Language shelf. Pre - requisites: Children should have been presented with pronouns. Around 7.5 to 8 years. Purpose: To introduce personal pronouns. Invitation: Would you like to know more about pronouns? Preparation: Have a group of 3-4 children invited. Ask the child to unroll a work mat. Go along with the child to the display and introduce the material and ask him to carry it to the mat. Sit along with the child. Presentation: Adult: “You remember when I wanted to say something what I wanted to do, I generally don’t say my name. I will say as I say, I can talk, I can speak and so on. If I wanted to talk to Sowmya, I don’t want to use her name. I can say ‘you’. ‘You come here’, ‘You get the box’. So ‘I’ is very important. ‘You’ is also little important because ‘I’ talking to ‘you’ about the boy named karthick. I would also say, ‘He’ is always early, ‘She’ is making lot of noise. If I decide to work with others, instead of saying I, I, I, it would be better to say ‘We’. ‘We can do the experiments together’. So being part of ‘We’ is really important as being a ‘I’. May be I can’t talk to you, you, you. I don’t want to say your name. I don’t want to say you, you, you. I can only say ‘You’. It represents ‘You’ as whole. When I want to say those people there, they are also a group. So we can say ‘they’ instead of she, her, and he. But ‘I’ is still important. ‘You’ are little important. Because ‘I’ am talking to ‘you’ about ‘she’ or ‘her’ and ‘she’ is of less important. We is also important because we are working together. A group of ‘You’ is little important because we are talking to ‘you’ and ‘they’ are really not important because we are talking about them. You may feel silly when I say ‘I’ is important. Show the chart 1, See, I is important and so painted in Gold. Chart 2, Say, “Here I is very important, so painted in gold. We is little important so colored in orange and smaller than I” Chart 3, Here, he and she are not important because I am speaking to you, about he or she. So they are not really important. They are painted in grey / silver color. Chart 4, We are all in gold. There are lots of I come together and all of us are working together. Each one of them is important. So each one is painted in gold. Chart 5, Here, it is a group of you. I am important because I am talking to you as a group. So ‘you’ are little important and painted in Orange. Chart 6, Here, I is gold, You in orange. I am speaking to you about ‘they’. There are many ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘It’, so they are in Silver. Adult: “I may sound silly but that is what grammar of English is. We can use me / her / him / us / them. They are group of pronouns, we call these as personal pronouns. They talk about persons and stand instead of noun. Again show chart 1 and say, “Here how many persons are there? – 1. So, I is important because there are only 1 person. So I is I person Singular” Show chart 2, Here you are the second person. We have only 1 I and only 1 you. So, you are the II person singular. Show chart 3, Here I am only the one here, ‘you’ also one. Here, she / he is only one, they are the third person. So he / she/ it becomes Third person Singular. Show chart 4, Here a group of I, its ‘We’. SO ‘We’ is I person plural, because we means more than 1. Show chart 5, When we say ‘you’ and means a group of ‘you’, it means II person plural. Show chart 6, Here there is they, so there are more than 1, becomes Third person plural. Do an informal 3 period name lesson. Follow ups: 1. Children can work with the charts again. 2. Write sentences using personal pronouns.
