A ballroom in a hotel is laid out as shown below. It is 60m long and 30m wide.
30m
60m
Part A
1. Calculate the perimeter of the entire ballroom
2. Calculate the total area of the ballroom.
Part B
It contains a stage and dancefloor as shown below.
Stage
(10m x 4m)
Dancefloor
(20m x 10m)

The dancefloor needs to be covered with rectangular tiles. The dimensions of the tiles are 80cm x 60cm. The
cost of a packet is 305 AED.
1. Calculate the area of one of the tiles (Consider the units).
2. Calculate the number of tiles needed to cover the dancefloor.
3. The tiles can only be bought in packets of 10. How many packets will be needed to cover the dancefloor?
4. How did you get your answer for Q3?
5. Calculate the total cost of the tiles.
6. If the volume of the stage is 65m3, how high is the stage?
Part C
Circular tables as shown below are going to be placed in the ballroom.
3m
1. Calculate the circumference of the table top. Use ∏ = 3.14
2. Ribbon costs 10 AED per meter. Find the cost of fixing ribbon around the rim of one of the table tops.
3. If you had rounded your answer in Q1 to the nearest whole number, how would it affect the cost of fixing
ribbon around the rim of one table top? Use supporting mathematical calculations.
4. If you had used the ∏ button on the calculator, how would it affect the cost of fixing ribbon around the rim of
one table top? Use supporting mathematical calculations.
10 seats will be placed around each table. 50cm width around the outside of the table is required for placing the
chairs. (The 3m diameter is the diameter if the table only, it does not include the space for the chairs)

3m
5. Find the maximum number of tables (along with chairs) that can be placed in the ballroom. (Tables should
not be placed on the stage or the dancefloor.)
6. Hence, calculate the maximum number of guests that can be seated in the ballroom.
7. Explain if your answers to Q5 & 6 make sense through the following:




the area of the ballroom excluding the stage and dancing areas
the total area of tables and chairs
the percentage of spaces provided for guests to move
any other constraint, you think, can be included
You may use the given diagram to help you
