Choose one activity from each group to complete. Tasks are to be done individually.
All sources should be cited.
Group A
Illustrate and explain how a microwave oven cooks food.
Who invented it? When was it invented? How are modern
microwave ovens different from the first one? How are they
similar? What was the first microwave called?
What does a thermal imaging camera do? What type of EM
waves does it use? What are 2 applications for this
technology?
Illustrate and explain how an X-ray machine works.
Research and tell about at least 2 tools that ghost hunters
use to detect ghosts. Explain how these tools use
electromagnetic energy.
Research two professions that use some sort of
electromagnetic waves. Present a brief report about how
the waves are used and create a diagram illustrating how
the waves are used.
Make a timeline showing important milestones in the history
of radio. Include at least 5 items. Explain the
difference between AM and FM.
Group B
Create a poster showing mechanical and electromagnetic waves.
Also include a list of different types of energy that are
transmitted with each type of wave.
Create a poster detailing the parts of a wave, both longitudinal
and transverse. Also create a poster showing the electromagnetic
spectrum. Include examples of how each type of energy is used.
Create a chart showing how sound is created by hitting a drum and
then travels through the air to our ears. Include illustrations
and explanations. Then create an illustration (with
explanations) of how shockwaves from an earthquake travel through
the ground.
Make a list of at least 5 things in your home or school that use
electromagnetic energy. Provide an illustration of each, then
describe how it uses electromagnetic energy.
Group C
Report on Heinrich Hertz, Guglielmo Marconi, Wilhelm
Roentgen or Paul Villard. Briefly summarize his life.
What contributions did he make to science? (one page
minimum)
Write a short story (one page minimum) about how you might
be able to use electromagnetic energy as a ‘super power.’
Explain how your power works, and how you will be able to
use it. Create an illustration of yourself as a super
hero.
