7.How are Protozoans different from bacteria?
Protozoans are unicellular, eukaryotic cells with no cell wall, containing no organs ( only
have specialised organelles such as Golgi bodies, mitochondria, peroxisomes, lysosomes
etc), whereas bacteria are unicellular , prokaryotic cells with no well-defined nucleus and do
not have membrane bound organelles such as mitochondria, lysosomes, Golgi bodies,
peroxisome, etc.
8. Can Protozoans be considered helpful? Discuss this concept.
Yes, they can be considered helpful because they form nucleus and cytoplasm and function
in carrying out all the processes including, Nutrition , excretion and osmoregulation,
reproduction , Locomotion, and growth.
9. Which lifecycle is found within the salivary glands of the Anopheles mosquito?
Oocyst.
10. List 5 individual Protozoans and the diseases they cause in humans. Use correct genus
and species names with the correct scientific writing of species (nomenclature).





Plasmodium faclciparum – cause malaria disease in humans
Giardia- causes giardiasis.
Euglena viridis- causes leishmaniasis and African sleeping sickness.
Amoeba proteus- causes amoebiasis
Trypanosoma brucei- causes Chagas disease and sleeping sickness.
11. Differentiate between gametic and zygotic meiosis in Protozoans.
In gametic meiosis, the organism spends most of its life cycle in the diploid (2n) condition
and meiosis occurs only at the time of gamete formation.
In zygotic meiosis, the organism spends most of its lice cycle in haploid(n) condition, and
meiosis takes place at the time of zygote germination.
12. Briefly describe the process of digestion and excretion in Protozoans.
Process of digestion in protozoa is described as follows:
After the initial acid phase, the cytoplasm of the protozoan forms enzymes enzymes,
proteolytic and carbohydrate in an alkaline medium and the enzymes now pass into the
food vacuoles and the vacuoles increase in size and become alkaline, the contents of
vacuoles are digested.
Process of excretion:
Waste products ( water, carbon dioxide and nitrogenous compounds) are passed out of the
body by diffusion or by contractile vacuoles.
