Project Title: Sisal Biomass to Energy
Round: One
Location: Kenya
Sector: Renewable Energy
Project Start Date: September 2011
Sub Sector: Power Generation and Distribution AECF Approved Funding: US$ 1,500,000
Teita Estate Ltd
Teita Estate Ltd (TEL) is one of the leading sisal producers in East Africa and runs the single largest
sisal plantation in the world producing 550-900t/month of sisal fibre. Old sisal plants (boles) which
are removed during replanting provide biomass which can be converted to energy. TEL removes
10.6m plants every year, equal to approximately 106,000t of dry material.
The Project Purpose
The AECF-TEL project purpose is to produce 8.1MW of electrical power in addition to its own
requirements. TEL will work closely with KPLC to design, install and manage a local grid system, but
as a contingency could supply power directly to the KPLC grid.
Expected Outcomes
Over the project period, TEL intends to produde the following from its materials;
1. Dry material (boles) at 12t/hr which can generate 8.1MW of continuous power.
2. Methane from wet waste can generate 0.95MW of electrical power continuously at 40%
generator electrical efficiency.
3. Waste heat - much of the energy in the waste materials will be lost as heat for which there is
no direct use at present but which could be put to use in the future.
4. Avoided methane emissions of 1,200t/yr which potentially has a carbon credit value of US$
0.25m/yr.
The project will directly benefit 5,176 households with an annual income of US$ 3,502 per
household and will at the end of the project period have a total benefit of US$ 18,393,019.
