DEALING WITH ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES
NEEDLE STICK INJURY
a- Remove your gloves and dispose of them properly (as biological
waste)
b- Squeeze puncture site to promote bleeding
c- Wash the area well with soap and water
d- Record the patient’s name and hospital ID number
Follow policy regarding treatment and follow-up:
a- Check patient’s specimen for possible risk of infection
b- Check health care worker blood for infection
c- If POSITIVE result, then repeat to confirm and seek medical
advice
d- If NEGATIVE results, return to work
e- Report accident to safety officer
CHEMICAL SPLASH ON THE SKIN
a- If acid or alkali then neutralize
b- Wash immediately with plenty of water
c- Seek medical advice
d- If effect is severe go the emergency department
e- Report accident to safety officer

SPLASH ON THE EYES
a- Stop working
b- Get assistance
c- Sit on a chair and ask a colleague to apply eye wash solution
d- Tilt the head to one side, opening the injured eye and flush with
continuous stream of solution
e- Tilt the head to other side, opening the other injured eye and flush
with continuous stream of solution
f- Seek medical advice
g- If effect is severe go the emergency department
h- Report accident to safety officer
RESPIRATORY HAZARD
a- Take immediately to open air or open windows, doors to allow for
fresh air
b- Release buttons, ties, and tight clothes around the chest and neck
areas
c- If no breathing then carry out artificial breathing while calling for
doctor or paramedics
d- Report accident to safety officer
INGESTION OF CHEMICALS
a- Wash mouth with plenty of water
b- Seek advice from reagent label or drug information centre
c- Induce vomiting if necessary
d- Milk may be used to neutralize acid
e- If effect is severe go the emergency department
f- Report accident to safety officer

GENERAL HEALTH PRECAUTIONS
a- Stop work if you suddenly become sick, ill, dizzy or generally
unwell
b- Take a rest or seek medical advice (investigate possible cause)
c- Do not work if you have any serious disease, fever or other
serious condition
PREGNANT WOMEN
a- Allow frequent rests
b- Give pregnancy and nursing or maternity leave
FIRST AID BOX
Ensure that there is a well stocked and updated first aid cabinet which should
contain the following;
a- Medical plaster
b- Sterile gauze
c- Cotton balls
d- Alcohol swabs
e- Antiseptic wound healning solution (Savlon or Dettol)
f- Aspirin or panadol
