Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library Requesting a New Journal The Librarians welcome suggestions for new journals, whether electronic or print. Journal subscriptions represent a continuing financial commitment in the Library budget. For this reason, they undergo a different consideration process than book purchases. How to Request a New Journal 1. Complete the Journal Request Form. (Page two of this document.) 2. If the purchase is in support of a new program or course, complete a Curriculum Committee Library Resource Sheet. 3. Discuss journal purchase with your Academic Department. 4. Schedule an appointment with a Reference Librarian to discuss your request and to submit the completed form. 5. All new journal subscriptions must be approved by the Director of the Library based on the recommendations from a Reference Librarian. Cost/Benefit Issues to Consider Current journal subscriptions that can be discontinued in your discipline to create funds for requested title(s). Consult with your academic department and other departments affected by this request, especially if it is an interdisciplinary resource. Support for research and instructional programs Anticipated use Balance across disciplines Faculty and Academic Department assessment of the importance of specific journal titles Are titles readily available through other vehicles? (i.e. Interlibrary Loan, subscription databases, free archives, etc.) Cost - generally anticipate increases of 10% annually, plus the cost of binding print. Publisher’s history of price increases Titles that have competitive and cost-effective print titles with Web-based equivalents Librarian Evaluation for New Journal Requests Review and renewal of current subscriptions is an ongoing process. Cancellation is considered for titles that provide the least value for the cost. The Library may not grant every request immediately as all subscriptions represent a continuing financial commitment. Some titles are cost-prohibitive. To provide scope for new subscriptions, the library monitors usage of existing print titles with a view of cancelling titles that provide the least value for the money. When taking out new subscriptions, cost permitting, the electronic version is preferred. Electronic format provides greater flexibility and accessibility for all campus constituents.
