Atmosphere
A mixture of gases that
surrounds a planet or moon.
Air Pressure
The measure of the force with
which air molecules push on a
surface.
Troposphere
• The lowest layer of the
atmosphere, in which temperature
decreases at a constant rate as
altitude increase (layer in which we
live.)
• equator =11-12 miles
• poles under 4 miles
• Weather occurs here
Stratosphere
• The layer of the atmosphere that is
above the troposphere and in which
temperature increases as altitude
increases (home of the Ozone layer)
• 12 miles to 31 miles high
• Many jet aircraft fly here(very stable)
• gases are layered
Bad Ozone
Tropospheric ozone:
Found in the lower atmosphere, near the
ground, is formed by cars, power plants,
chemical plants and other sources that
react in the presence of sunlight. It is a
greater concern in areas with higher
temperatures and higher pollution.
Good Ozone
• Stratospheric Ozone:
Shields us from the suns UV
rays.
• 10-30 miles above Earth's
surface in the stratosphere.
Thermosphere
• The uppermost layer of the
atmosphere, in which temperature
increases as altitude increase (The
edge of the atmosphere).
• 53 to 375 miles high
• Auroras and space shuttle
Mesosphere
• The layer of the atmosphere between
the stratosphere and the thermosphere
and in which temperature decreases as
altitude increases (middle layer.)
• 32 to 53 miles high
• Meteors burn up
Ionosphere
• The layer between the upper
mesosphere and the lower
thermosphere (home of the Auroras).
• layer of electrically charged particles
called ions
Exosphere
• The last layer: beyond this lies
space.
• 400 to 6200 miles high
