MATERIAL TRANSFER APPARATUS Presentation IV – Final Presentation THE TEAM oTeam Members o Kris Auclair o Shea Dillon o Braden Leasure o Jon Petersen o Chris Smith o Andrew Van Denend oPSU Faculty Advisor o Dr. Chien Wern oSponsor Contact o Mark Van Sickle, PE BACKGROUND o Portland Company founded in 1946 o Fabricator and Installer of a variety of sheet metal products o o o o o Commercial HVAC Architectural sheet metal Industrial Air Systems Cleanroom and Technology services Duct Accessories o Commissioned PSU Capstone group for a project to improve a shop floor process PROBLEM o Operator moves and manually unloads sheets from cart onto the plasma table o Intensive manual labor process – cart loaded in excess of 3000 lbs o Steel caster wheels require large effort to push cart when loaded De-coiling conveyor Manual Transfer Plasma Table CURRENT PROCESS o Current process time is = 2:45. Cycle Time = 0:30. o Current carts have no onboard brakes or handles. o The entire process is hands on. OPPORTUNITY o Design a machine to transfer sheet metal from the conveyor on de-coiler to CNC plasma table. o o o o Accommodate Sheet metal between 26 and 16 ga flat sheets. Largest sheet to be 120 in x 72 in Smallest sheet to be 36 in x 36 in Most common (95%) sheet is between 72 and 120 in long and 60 in wide o Primary motivation is to make this a “hands-free” process for safety enhancement. • SHEET METAL TRANSFER APPARATUS NEW PROCESS ● Process time = 2:44. Cycle time = 0:22. ● New easier to operate ● Hands off unloading process SHEET METAL TRANSFER APPARATUS – DESIGN o Metal secured via Vacuum Lifter o o o o o o Anver L80M8104/44 Lift Frame 800 lb capacity Up to 12’x6’ Sheet Adjustable pad orientation Accommodates largest and smallest of sheets Valves at each pad SHEET METAL TRANSFER APPARATUS – DESIGN o Telescoping boom motion accomplished via 3 custom trolleys and stepper motor – belt system o Use of 2 2-phase hybrid step motors o Applied motion HT24-108 o Bipolar Holding Torque: 354 oz-in o 20 total 600 lb static capacity, steel flanged rollers utilized for motion along beam SHEET METAL TRANSFER APPARATUS – DESIGN o Column motion accomplished via carriage – ball screw assembly o 1000 lb design load o 3 second design travel speed o 640 in/min average velocity SHEET METAL TRANSFER APPARATUS – DESIGN o Use of industrial PLC to control Boom, stepper motors o Wiring diagrams and block diagrams developed o Emergency shutoff and limit switches incorporated for additional safety measures SHEET METAL TRANSFER APPARATUS – DESIGN o o o o Custom Cart for ease in handling Frame – steel square tubing load capacity - 3500 lbs Mount for vaccuum generation and controls o Casters - Spinfinity Maintenance Free Series ZFFM Capacity 2600 lbs. per caster o Flip up locking handles and caster brakes FABRICATION AND DELIVERABLES •Objective to deliver Custom / Machined components to Streimer •Mechanical Drawing and assembly package for all other components FABRICATION AND DELIVERABLES FABRICATION AND DELIVERABLES QUESTIONS?
