Exercises
1. Prepare a glossary (definitions) of the following terms:
a. Aquifer
b. Recharge
c. Irrigation return flow
d. Water rights
e. Litigation
f. Capture zone
g. Leachate plume
h. Geologic setting
i. Unconfined aquifer
j. Yield (as in high-yield well)
k. Aquifer heterogenities
2. List the type of modeling (i.e. generic, interpretive, or
predictive) that is appropriate for each of the following
problems. Prepare a brief justification for your choice.
a. A planning agency wants to determine the effect of
pumping a high-yield irrigation well on four nearby
wells that are used for domestic water supply and are
located at distances of 0.2, 0.4, 0.9, 1.1 km from the
irrigation well.
b. A hydrologist wants to estimate the change in hydraulic
conductivity across a 125 meter wide fault zone through
an unconfined sandstone aquifer.
c. A lawyer wants to estimate seasonal fluctuations in the
water table resulting from a change in timing and
distribution of groundwater recharge from irrigation
return flow. The change in recharge was brought about
by recent litigation involving water rights.
d. A consulting firm wants to determine what types of
aquifer heterogeneities would cause a 25% reduction in
the size of the capture zone of a well designed to pump

contaminated water from what was thought to be a
homogeneous outwash aquifer.
e. A regulatory agency wants to estimate the probable
pathway of a leachate plume emanating from a
hypothetical landfill for a variety of hydrogeologic
settings that are representative of a large regional area.
3. Review the U.S. EPA’s well head protection program (use a
web browser to find relevant information). State your
opinion on the types of models appropriate to accomplish
program goals in a specific type of geologic setting. Provide
justification for your opinion.
4. One step in the modeling protocol in Section 1.4 of the
reading is model verification. What would be the effects of
omission of this step on the applications considered in
problem 2.
