Washington Bridge to College Courses Overall Course Roles and Responsibilities Community of Practice (CoP) Roles Project Leadership Team (OSPI/SBCTC partnership) Bridge Course TRAINERS Communication Roles Manage grants to Bridge to College districts/schools to support teacher training, materials, and participation in CoPs Create broad framework for ongoing professional learning for the courses Establish Bridge to College Regional CoP teams based on district/school course offerings Support Course Trainers in their work with Team Leaders and local CoPs Convene Course Trainers and Team Leaders to assess and refine professional learning efforts Review and understand the core components of the course Cultivate a deep understanding of the overall course framework and the frameworks of the individual modules Identify professional learning needs and identify materials to facilitate/lead three major convenings: 1. Summer Institute in August 2. November CoP day (exact date determined by regional teams) 3. February CoP day (exact date to be determined) Develop structures with the Bridge Team Leaders to support common CoP facilitation Collaborate with Bridge Team Leaders to plan and outline the CoP calendar (locations/times) August 2016 BTC Teacher/Principal Training Provide general messaging support to external audiences about the Bridge to College courses and the overall project Maintain public-facing website focused exclusively on the Bridge to College courses Secure appropriate materials (i.e. books, photocopies, flipcharts, projectors, etc.) and logistical information for trainings and other support for CoPs to project leadership team Check in at least four times per year via email/phone with each Bridge Team Leader in assigned region Provide a written review to project leadership team that connects themes, experiences, and reflections across regional CoP teams Document technical assistance or troubleshooting efforts throughout the course and share with project leadership team Make suggestions for further changes/adaptations to the course and/or modules, and implementation efforts to project leadership team 1 Community of Practice (CoP) Roles Bridge TEAM LEADERS Bridge Course TEACHERS Bridge Course BUILDING PRINCIPALS Communication Roles Set up CoP logistics (locations/times) 5 meetings across the 2016-17 school year (exact dates determined per each team) 1. October 2. November w/ Trainer present 3. January 4. February w/ Trainer present 5. April Collaborate with Bridge Course Trainer to identify professional learning needs for CoP. Facilitate CoP meetings using protocols/processes for engaging adult learners in meaningful collaboration. Teach modules to students Collect student work to bring to CoP Engage in processes of reviewing student work and/or stories to practice the implementation science related to the coursework – plan/do/reflect/act Learn about key instructional shifts that occur in your classroom as a result of teaching this class Think critically about the content, strategies and student learning Support all Bridge course teachers to participate in 3-5 regional CoP events throughout the school year. Collaborate, as necessary and possible, with other principals in the region regarding the continued support system for Bridge Course teachers August 2016 BTC Teacher/Principal Training Provide a schedule of meeting dates/locations to your Bridge Course Teachers by September 30th, 2016. Communicate material needs/scheduling needs to Bridge Course Trainer at least two weeks in advance of Nov & Apr CoP meetings. Communicate with your team via email/phone/ to prepare for each CoP meeting. Identify local needs to share with Bridge Course Trainers. Report on CoP meetings. Attend and participate in 3- 5 CoP days (New teachers are expected to attend all 5 CoP meetings. Returning teachers are encouraged to attend all 5 meetings but only 3 are required.) Share successes and challenges with Bridge Course Leader Connect with Bridge course Leader as questions arise Attend and participate in 1-day Bridge course training in August to learn about the course and participating teacher commitments Offer opportunities for Bridge Course teachers within the building to collaborate and share t Facilitate the process of student-identification and participation in the Bridge courses Serve as key communicators with other high school principals in the region and/or state regarding Bridge Course implementation 2 Community of Practice (CoP) Roles Higher Ed Partners ESD Partners (Assistant Superintendents for Teaching and Learning; Regional Math and/or ELA Coordinators) Communication Roles Facilitate higher education participation in CoPs Assist in coordination of assessment, teaching and learning activities Attend CoP meetings Share higher education perspective Share project work with campus communities Share higher ed perspectives and questions with CoPs As necessary, partner with Bridge Course Trainers and/or Team Leaders to support regional CoPs – could include providing expertise and/or space As possible, attend CoP meetings Support regional communications across districts and high schools regarding the Bridge to College course implementation and how to participate Work with project leadership to assure ongoing regional support for the course August 2016 BTC Teacher/Principal Training 3
