Caffeine
• Caffeine is a stimulant that can be addicting.
• What is a stimulant?
– are psychoactive drugs which induce temporary
improvements in either mental or physical
function or both. Examples of these kinds of
effects may include enhanced alertness,
wakefulness, and locomotion, among others

• What are things we consume that have
caffeine?
– Energy drinks
– Chocolate
– Coffee
– Soda drinks
– tea
Too much
• Consumption of large amounts of caffeine –
usually more than 250 mg per day – can lead
to a condition known as caffeinism.
Effects of caffeine
• Central Nervous system
• Cardiovascular
– cardiac muscle (increases heart rate), and
respiratory system (relaxes air passages permitting
improved breathing)

• delays fatigue (having the effect of warding off
drowsiness and restoring alertness).
– Makes the symptoms of sleep subside but they
are still there.

Stomach upset
• Caffeine absorption occurs in the body very
quickly – caffeine enters the bloodstream
through the stomach and small intestine, and
its effects are felt as soon as 15 minutes after
consumption. It is completely absorbed within
45 minutes of ingestion.
– Caffeine does not accumulate in the bloodstream
nor is it stored in the body, but it does persist –
only about ½ is eliminated in the urine within 3
hours.

• Tolerance may develop, depending on the
person

– Ginseng, Taurine, energy blend, Guarana, ect.
– Little bit of sugar, salt and lots of B vitamins with
mega doses of caffeine

• Great to replenish lost electrolytes, sodium
and potassium.
• What is so bad about them?
• Less than 2 hours of working out don’t need it
