One example is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights set out by the UN in 1945 See page 24 of your text The first question you might have regarding human rights is likely to be ‘What constitutes a human rights violation?’ The Code's goal is to prevent discrimination and harassment because of: race ancestry place of origin color ethnic origin citizenship creed (religion) sex (including pregnancy and gender identity) sexual orientation disability age (18 and over, 16 and over in occupancy of accommodation) marital status (including same sex partners) family status receipt of public assistance (in accommodation only) record of offences (in employment only). The Ontario Human Rights Code (Code) is a provincial law that gives everybody equal rights and opportunities without discrimination in the social areas of: employment accommodation goods services and facilities membership in vocational associations and trade unions An organization that serves a group protected by the Code, such as religious, educational or social institutions serving ethnic groups, people with disabilities, religious groups, etc., may choose to employ only members of that group; An employer may choose to hire or not hire, or to promote or not promote his or her own spouse, child or parent or the spouse, child or parent of an employee; An employer may discriminate on the basis of age, sex, record of offences or marital status if these are genuine requirements of the job. For example, a shelter for battered women may choose to hire only women as counselors; a club may only hire male attendants to work in the men’s locker room; or a child care facility may refuse to hire someone convicted of child molesting on the ground that the hiring would pose a safety risk to the children. In such instances, the employer must consider whether any accommodation can be made to enable that person to work in the position. See page 103 of text. Can an employer refuse to hire your son or daughter? Could a file a complaint against the Catholic school system for not hiring Catholics? Can the Peel Police refuse a quadriplegic as a field officer?
