BERRIEN COUNTY RESOURCE RECOVERY
SCHOOL GRANT PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Deadline: Wednesday, November 14, 2007
OVERVIEW
Berrien County Resource Recovery School Grant program is available to provide
monetary support for waste reduction and recycling projects in schools. Grant
money will go toward purchasing recycling equipment and/or curriculum supplies
to help carry out the projects. Projects should provide new or expanded in-school
opportunities in the 4R’s; reducing, reusing, recycling, and re-buying (buying
recycled products).
The School Resource Recovery grant is competitive and based on innovative ways to
introduce or strengthen the 4R’s in the school system, integrate or improve recycling
collection throughout the school/district, and implement classroom programs and
curriculums to enhance recycling activities in school. Especially critical in the
evaluation process is the long-term effectiveness of the use of funds.
The County Board of Commissioners has allocated $10,000 of the County Landfill
Use Fund for the 2007-2008 School Resource Recovery Grant. Grant submissions
may be made for any amount up to $1,500 per applicant. The County can also
award partial funding of projects.
ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS
The Resource Recovery School Grant program is open to any public, non-public,
public school academy, home-school group, or school districts in Berrien County
(district-wide programs encouraged) for grades K-12, and college campuses located
in Berrien County.
REVIEW PROCESS
Completed grant proposals received on or before the deadline, November 14, 2007,
will be reviewed by the Grant Selection Committee. The committee reserves the
right to request additional information (including the ability to execute the grant
with partial funding) if needed, or reject any submissions that it feels do not meet
the criteria listed. Grant recipients will be announced in December.
GRANT MONETARY PROCEDURES: REIMBURSEMENT
Monies awarded to a school/district will be paid on a reimbursement basis. The
grantee will be required to submit documentation of all funds expended toward the
project, which were outlined and approved on the original grant application,
including copies of all receipts. Based on review and approval of this information,
the grantee will be reimbursed for project expenses.
PROJECT AND REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
The grantee will be required to submit to Berrien County Resource Recovery the
project funds expended documentation and receipts no later than May 30, 2008
for reimbursement. For faster reimbursement, grantees may submit documentation
as equipment is received. The Environmental Specialist is available for technical
assistance as projects are put into place. She will also contact the School/District
grant contact person after the project is in place for an update & review.
