Review of September 13, 2006 Preseason Minutes – Approved. Review of 2006-07 year a. Track and field events – for future meets, the group requested having visiting teams drop off their training kits to the host athletic training area so supplies would be accessible when student athletes need to be taped; and to reiterate that the host AT has the final determination of student-athletes’ competition status if the traveling team does not have an AT. b. The group felt it would be beneficial to have the AT sport liaison sit on preseason calls just as the sports information directors do (see recommendation below). NEWMAC Handbook (AT Policy and Procedures) – The group reviewed and updated the handbook. Medical Clearance Policies (NCAA Legislation Q&A attached) a. The group discussed the new legislation and the impact this is having on their departments and institutions. There are major concerns regarding the medical clearance process for the upcoming year, especially with regard to clearing spring sport athletes in their non-traditional season (fall), walk-ons, transfers, and students who go abroad for a semester. Some felt it might be best for non-traditional sports to start a week later so the athletic trainers have the appropriate time to medically clear the student-athletes. There will need to be a “window of time” to medically clear walk-ons. b. The group would like this issue brought forward for discussion at the May AAG meeting. c. The athletic trainers would like to review the May AAG meeting minutes to see if a follow-up conference call is necessary over the summer. d. Suggestions to educate current and incoming student-athletes and transfers included: i. Posting this new information on the departmental website. ii. Including it in student-athlete handbooks. iii. Include this information on current medical clearance forms used at each institution. Supplies To Send With Your Team to Tournaments (Traditional/Non-Traditional) a. Please send water bottles with your teams to tournaments. Some of these tournaments are quite large and it is easy to go through cases of cups in no time. V. Medical Hardship Waivers a. Previously, the medical hardship waiver committee reviewed medical hardship waiver applications, but our process has changed. Now, medical hardship waivers should be submitted to Katie Hersey and she will review them. Please be sure to include contemporaneous documentation (required by NCAA) or the medical hardship will not be approved. This should include documentation stating that the athlete has sustained a season ending XXX injury by the treating physician. Once Katie makes a decision, she will notify the institution. If an institution wishes to appeal her decision, they may do so and the medical hardship waiver committee will review the case. b. Coaches should have discussions with injured student-athletes and inform student-athletes they will need to submit the contemporaneous documentation in order for a medical hardship waiver to be granted. Without this information, a waiver should not be filed. VII. VIII. IX. AED update Babson – 1 at every site (4), and with campus police (5) Clark – 2 in athletics dept, and 2 in campus police, 1 travels with lacrosse team if the school doesn’t have one this one comes from athletics dept. The sport liaison athletic trainer should sit on the preseason call. Rationale: Athletic Trainers can remind coaches to bring athletic training kits to away contests and remind coaches that if a visiting team is not traveling with a certified athletic trainer, the host certified athletic trainer will have the final determination of return to play of visiting studentathletes for all injuries. In addition, athletic trainers could review the contemporaneous requirement of hardship waivers with coaches. (Passed: 10-0) Date and time for 2008 preseason call. Possible dates and times will be emailed to the group for a call during the first week of September. Meeting adjourned at 12:25 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Kelly Hart, Associate Director Springfield College
