Developing an Innovation Park at University of Nordland Campus - Senior Adviser Per Gaute Pettersen: +47 97724555 / [email protected] - Senior Adviser Lotte Grepp Knutsen: +47 90768540 / [email protected] Mission and objectives • Mission: To contribute to knowledge based value creation and business development. • Objective: The realisation of an Innovation Park on Campus, consisting of: – Innovation activity, carried out by a company dedicated to create clusters – both within and around the Innovation park, carry out innovation and commercialization activities, project initiation, -development and administration within the affiliated area of the university. – Building/premises on campus that enables collocation of research/outreach activities at the university, with business and public players that benefit from working close with research and education. – The premises itself will be used to create clusters of related activity, as well as hosting new enterprises (both spin-offs/-outs and existing business from other regions). Expectations and potential • Increased expectations to (and measuring of) universities’ contribution to regional (and overall) innovation and business development • Need for more “cross boarder” activity between education, research and business: – Acceptance => encouragement => expectation/requirement – Educating a new generation of researchers who understand both business and research challenges • Joint projects and consortiums between research and business • Joint projects are often based on running clusters/relations, which are also a source for new ideas, experience, market channels and financing. • Both linear and systemic innovations • Former spin-offs/spin-outs become new partners • Both development and attraction of new business Support in overall strategies • High North Strategy - Nordområdemeldingen – “Bodø as centre for knowledge development regarding business development and possibilities in the high north” • Both regional (Nordland fylkeskommune) an local (Bodø kommune) government’s ambitions for the university’s role in development and prosperity – increased R&D and innovation. • Priority in the university’s strategy. Important for developing both the university’s and affiliated institutions’ project portfolio. The roles of an Innovation Park • Arena for generating joint projects – Cluster development – Connecting arena for researchers, business and public sector – Active linkage of project possibilities – Management/secretariat for large projects • Collocation of contract research and outreach activities. – Science park / project hotel – Cross faculty centres or priorities • Precubation, incubation, “greenhouse” and commercialisation (TTO) • Meeting-, classrooms and conference centre • Joint support and infrastructure • Joint marketing and public relation, credibility «The innovation machine» From The Bio Value Report («Bioverdirapporten») The Innovation company • Project development – Mobilize, generate and facilitate R&D projects or consortiums with business, research, education and public partners • Cluster development – Develop prioritised fields both within and outside the premises.
