The technical differences between PTO and PTC sensors mean that they are used in different situations.

The following diagram illustrates the different electrical connection criteria applied to both types of sensor. PTC sensors
always require an auxiliary trip circuit to convert variation in resistance into a command to the motor power switches. PTO
sensors, on the other hand, can be connected directly to the remote electromechanical switches.

PTC temperature sensors (E3)
PTC sensors consist of resistors whose resistance varies with ambient temperature. If temperature exceeds
a threshold known as Rated Operating Temperature (ROT), the sensor assumes a very high resistance that
changes the signal received by the trip circuit.
DIN standards 44081 and 44082 establish sensor resistance in Ohms as a function of ROT, at fixed
temperature intervals.
