- Use appropriate PPE
- Use liquid chemical formulas
instead of aerosols
- Use a squirt bottle to distribute
cleaning chemical on benches
instead of spray bottles which
avoids a fine mist
-Use wet floor signs during
mopping
-Wear non-slip shoes
- Implement a SWMS and correct
training procedures to ensure safe
practices are followed
-Follow manufacturers instructions
for disinfection
- Implement a SWMS which
includes advice on appropriate
hand hygiene
-Wipe the benches from both sides
to minimise bending
-Mop a small area in front of the
person mopping and then move to
the next section rather than
bending or flexing the body
-If you cannot wipe form both sides,
wipe from the back to the front to
minimise chemical contact
-Buy smaller quantities from the
supplier
-If pouring chemicals into a smaller
container, store the chemicals on a
bench with a tap fitted from the
large container
-Use appropriate PPE such as
gloves, laboratory coat, safety
glasses and boots

SUMMARY OF RISK – Review the risk measured, and the controls, then please select the relevant risk summary statement:
A
The assessment reveals that the potential risk to health from the use of the plant/equipment/procedure is not currently significant
B
The assessment reveals that the potential risk to health from the use of the plant/equipment/procedure is significant. However controls are in place that reduce risk to acceptable levels
C
The assessment reveals that the potential risk to health from the use of the plant/equipment/procedure is significant. Interim controls are in place to reduce risk to acceptable levels.

HOW TO ACCESS THE RISK
Step A - Consider the consequences
For each hazard, consider the consequences if
something happens. Consider what could
reasonably have happened, as well as what
actually happened (if there was an
accident/incident). Look at the descriptions
below and choose the most suitable
consequence
Step B - Consider the likelihood
How likely is it that something will happen as a
result of the hazard?
Consequence
Fatality
Description
May cause death and/or
severe irreversible disability,
and/or permanent ill health
Severe injury or illness
Likelihood
Very likely
Likely
Will probably occur in time
Minor (usually reversible) injury
or illness resulting in days off
work
First aid level medical
treatment
No treatment required
Possible
Might occur in the next few
months
Unlikely
Could happen, but only rarely
Highly
unlikely
Has the potential to occur, but
probably never will
Major
Minor
First Aid
Negligible
Step C – Calculate the Risk Level
1. Take the Step A rating and select the correct line
2. Take the Step B rating and select the correct column
3. Circle the risk level where the two ratings cross in the matrix below
Look at the descriptions below and choose the
most suitable Likelihood
Description
Will probably occur immediately
or within a short period of time

Mechanical action, impact, electrical exposure, heat/cold, noise, vibration,
explosion, lifting, manual handling, etc.
Corrosive liquid, toxic gases, noxious fumes etc.
Height of workbench, design of chair, set-up of a work station, manual handling
etc.
x-ray machine, infrared beams etc.
Stress from using equipment without proper training or instruction, interpersonal
conflict
Sharps, specimen containers carrying infected material, viruses from A/C
system
Environment
Substances
Equipment/plant
Elimination
Is it necessary
Substitution
Is there a less hazardous alternative
Isolation
Eg Restrict access, use in a closed container, fume cabinet
Engineering
Eg Trolleys to move loads, guards on machinery, Fume
cupboard
