PROGRAM OVERVIEW
ACADEMIC PREPAREDNESS
The University offers the A.A.S. Degree in Respiratory Therapy. The curriculum reflects high standards of professional
practice and incorporates guidelines from practice trends, professional organizations, and accrediting agencies.
Students develop the knowledge base and clinical competencies required to meet the health care needs of patients
with cardiopulmonary disorders. Respiratory Therapists treat patients along the age and health-care continuums--from
premature infants to the aged in critical care, acute care, rehabilitation, and home care settings. The Respiratory
Therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), 1248 Harwood Rd.,
Bedford, TX 76021-4244.
UDC recognizes the important connection between
student success and academic preparedness. Depending
on placement test scores and/or equivalent college course
work, students may be required to complete co-requisite
courses in English and math. Only credits earned for the
college-level portion of the co-requisite pairing count
towards degree completion requirements.
SEQUENCE OF STUDY
The required courses for the degree program are listed in suggested sequence on the reverse side of this document.
Students are expected to complete prerequisite and co-requisite courses as indicated.


A Prerequisite is a requirement which must be completed prior to enrollment in a particular class. This can be a
placement test score or a course. For example, ENGL-111: English Composition I must be taken prior to ENGL-112:
English Composition II.
Co-requisite is a course that must be taken in the same semester. For example, APCT 104C: Introduction to
Applications of Computers Lecture must be taken along with APCT 105C: Introduction to Applications of
Computers Lab.

cumulative UDC-CC GPA of 2.5 or greater.
st
 Submit a Respiratory Application by the First (1 ) Friday in March for the following Fall Semester.
Applications are available the first week of January in the Health Sciences office: 801 North Capitol
St., NE, Room 811, Washington, DC 20002 |Email: [email protected] | Phone: (202) 274-6167
 Perform a National Criminal Background Clearance check from Global Investigative Services (1700

 Admission Exam. Students must take an admission exam as part of the application process. The
exam will be scheduled by a faculty member. Once the exam has been taken, Respiratory faculty will
interview and select students for enrollment and a letter of acceptance will be sent to students.
TRANSFER STUDENTS - In addition to the requirements above, transfer students must:
 Submit and have their official transcripts evaluated by UDC’s Office of Admissions prior to making
application to the clinical phase of the program.
 Complete at least one course at UDC-CC before making application to the clinical phase of the
program and have a UDC-CC GPA of 2.5 or greater.
The Respiratory Therapy Program is highly COMPETITIVE. The number of
students entering the program is limited to the number of clinical spots
available in any given semester. Students indicating respiratory therapy
as their desired major; but, who have not entered the clinical phase are
NOT OFFICIALLY in the Respiratory Program. Students accepted into the
program will receive a letter of acceptance to the clinical phase of the
program from the Respiratory Therapy Department. Students who have a
desire to enter the clinical phase of the program are recommended to do
the following:
 Do well in all science courses as the foundation of the respiratory
therapy profession rests on the theoretical and scientific knowledge.
 Maintain your grade point average (GPA) as high as possible as this is
one of the key indicators in the application process. While the
minimum GPA requirement is 2.5, it is advisable that students
maintain a much higher GPA.
 Do well in mathematics as a number of respiratory therapy courses
depend on a good knowledge of math.
 Do well in English with special emphasis on writing skills as a
Respiratory Therapist is a key member of the health care team and
thus the ability to express oneself in writing and speaking is critical to
the care of patients.
