Independent laboratory
Coal, cokes, biomass &
torrified coal (green coal)
TLR is an independent laboratory that is equipped to perform analyses
on a wide range of products such as coal, cokes, biomass, biofuels
and by-products of the biofuel production process. We are performing
analysis of solid fuels since the ‘70s and have been accredited for more
than two decades according to the ISO 17025 standard by the Dutch
Council of Accreditation (Reg. Nr. L059).
As a state of the art laboratory, TLR provides multiple
preparation units to offer a broad variety of analysis for
solid (bio) fuels:
- Ultimate analyses
(Hydrogen, Carbon, Sulphur, Nitrogen and Oxygen)
- Proximate analyses
(Moisture, Ash, Volatiles and Calorific Value)
- Ash Composition
(SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, P2O5, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, MnO2, SO3, etc.)
- Ash Fusion Temperature
- Hard Grove Index (HGI)
- Free Swelling Index (FSI)
- Metals
- Anions
(total Fluorine, Chlorine and Bromide)
- Sieve tests
As a recognized analyst, TLR is actively participating in independent
quality certification schemes such as GAFTA (including a special
recognition for GAFTA biomass analysis), FOSFA, QS and GMP+.
Moreover, TLR is recognized as a SCOTA preferred laboratory.
We aim to provide our clients fast and accurate analysis results within
five working days. For biofuels we also offer a faster service, providing
analysis results within one day.
Analysis results are reported as:
- PDF via email;
- hard copy by regular mail or fax;
- Digital copy transmitted via XML, TLR Format and/or Ezflux;
-Intermediate reporting via an interactive web based application
that displays validated results.
OR ANALYSE THIS
Not only do we analyse sustainable and renewable fuels, we also emphasize
our role as a sustainable company by taking care of the environment:
we have implemented energy saving measures, we are recycling
cooling water and ascertain that all of our chemical waste is
collected by a specialised company.

Biomass (solid biofuel)
Biomass is defined as a renewable energy source, that is derived from
biological material. Nowadays, biomass is mainly used to generate
electricity or produce heat. Biomass can be categorised in four types:
-Woody biomass made of forest residues (such as dead trees, branches
and tree stumps), yard clippings and wood chips;
-By-products of agricultural processes such as palm kernel expellers,
coffee husks, rice husks and olive cake;
-Waste from households and industry, for example as vegetable/fruit/
gardening waste, garbage, demolition wood and residues from the
timber industry;
-Cultivated energy crops such as eucalyptus trees for dedicated
biomass use.
Fly ash
Fly ash is a residue that originates from the combustion process of coal
and biomass. Usually, it is captured from the flue gas of coal fired power
plants. Depending on the type and blend of coal and biomass that is
being burnt, the composition of fly ash may vary considerably.
Fly ash contains substantial amounts of Silicon Dioxide (SiO2) - both
amorphous and crystalline - and Calcium Oxide (CaO), both being
endemic ingredients of carbonaceous rock. The components of fly ash
are, for instance, vital for the production of cement and concrete.

Bio-alcohols
Biologically occuring alcohols such as propanol, butanol and ethanol are
generated by enzyme-producing micro-organisms that convert sugars
and starch or by the liquefaction of cellulosic biomass, such as trees
and grasses.
Ethanol can be used as a fuel for vehicles without additional processing,
but it is usually used as a gasoline additive to increase the octane level
and reduce harmful exhaust emissions. TLR can perform all analyses
within 24 hours in accordance with EN15376 and IMPCA. For example:
metals, acidity, methanol content, non volatile material, moisture, etc.
Biodiesel
(PME, RME, SME, UCOME)
When looking at its characteristics, biodiesel is a fuel, very similar to
common diesel. However, it is produced from renewable feed stock,
such as vegetable oils or animal fats. Canola oil, used cooking oil,
palm oil or soya oil are common origins.
To enhance the quality of the fuel, the oils are trans-estificated,
resulting in a methyl ester such as soya methyl ester (SME).
Biodiesel is a non toxic, low sulphur, low aromatic and
biodegradable fuel. At TLR we can perform any of your analyses
within 24 hours in accordance with EN14214. For example:
ester content, diglyceride and triglyceride content, metals, total
contamination, CFPP, viscosity, moisture, etc.

Glycerine
Glycerine is a by-product of the trans-esterification process.
Because of its moisture preserving abilities, glycerine is often used
in products for personal care (cosmetics, tooth paste and creams).
Because of its soothing characteristics, it is also used in cough syrups
and suppositories. Industry utilizes glycerine as plasticizer in plastics
and anti freeze. TLR can provide the requested quality parameters
for glycerine with a very agile analysis service (moisture, MONG,
methanol, glycerine, ash, etc.).
By-products of Bio-ethanol
and biodiesel
TLR has been accredited as per ISO 17025, Q&S, Labcode, OVOCOM for
years and is acknowledged to determine the nutritional value and
hazardous substances in by-products of fermented wheat concentrates,
syrups, Protistar, etc.
- Nutritional value
- Minerals and metals
- Mycotoxins
- Pesticides
- Dioxin and dioxin like PCBs
- Microbiological parameters
- DNA analysis (GMO and species)
