Environmental Guidance Sheet # 1
Removal of Fuel or Chemical Storage Tanks
Purpose: The purpose of this guidance sheet is to provide recommended procedures in
requesting the removal of fuel or chemical storage tanks. Requests for the removal of
fuel or chemical storage tanks may occur when a facility closes, the mission has changed
and the need for the storage tank is no longer required or the storage tank no longer meets
the state or fire code regulatory requirements.
For the purpose of this guidance sheet, fuel or chemical storage tanks are defined as
any fuel or chemical storage tank either aboveground (AST) or underground (UST)
which contains any of the following chemicals: Gasoline, diesel, JP8, kerosene, waste oil
and any other types of solid waste.
A written request for the removal of the storage tank must be provided by the
Commander(s) and Administrative Officer(s) (AO) located at the facility in which the
storage tank is located. An example of a request is enclosed. The request is to be
forwarded to:
Fort Indiantown Gap,
Env. Div., Building 0-11,
Attn: Program Manager
Annville Pa. 17003-5002
Upon receipt of the written request, the Environmental Division will obtain approval
from affected directors and process the request. If the request is denied, notification will
be provided to the requestor(s).
The Environmental Division may be contacted at (717) 861-8181 if there are any
questions regarding this guidance.
