2016/2017 Canada West Medical Services to Visiting Teams
The following information will clarify the medical and therapy services available during your
stay at the University of Winnipeg. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to

Services
Provided

The Host Therapist or Designated First Aid personnel will discuss
the appropriate emergency action protocol with the visiting
medical staff prior to competition time.

If teams do not travel with a dedicated medical representative, an
alternative staffing plan must be organized between the
institutions’ head therapist at least 1 week prior to the event.
 If you do not have a therapist travelling with your team, your team
will be billed according to the Canada West Universities Athletic
Association Operations Manual, Section 14: Medical Support
Services Guidelines

During all Can-West competitions at the University of Winnipeg, a
student therapist and/or a Certified Athletic Therapist will be in
attendance as the host medical contact.

A doctor will be on-site for all CW wrestling events hosted by the
University of Winnipeg

There will be no host medical coverage during team practices
unless requested 1 week in advance.

All non-urgent transport of injured athletes is the responsibility of
the visiting team.

All supplies must be provided by the visiting team or a charge
back of our supplies will apply.


Emergency
Equipment

Training Room

Emergency telephone: at customer service desk at main entrance
to the Duckworth Centre.

AED: at customer service desk (Duckworth) and in Hallway
outside racquetball courts (Duckworth), Clubhouse (Waverly
complex)

Ice and ice bags: On-site

Crutches: On-site

Splints: On-site

Spine board and accessories: On-site (Duckworth site only)

Oxygen: Stored (Duckworth site)

Blanket: On-site

Water and towels: On-site
Any costs associated with the destruction of equipment due to vandalism
or misuse will be billed back to the visiting team Athletics program. A list
of supplies available will be reviewed by host staff as part of the EAP for
each event.

Visiting therapists can use the taping/training room located
adjacent to the gymnasium in the Duckworth Centre. At the
Waverley soccer complex, there is a training room available for all
team prep and injury assessment needs.

Therapist, Sarah Goold, by phone at 204-786-9250, or in person in
the Athletic Therapy Centre to plan for access/availability.
Clinic


University of Winnipeg Athletic Therapy Centre
Due to fluctuations in clinic hours please call prior to travel in
order to ensure availability of the clinic and clinic staff.
Physician
Services

Please contact the Athletic Therapy Centre for referral to a Sports
Medicine Physician. Where non-emergent physician assistance is
requested the head therapist will facilitate contact between the host
and visiting team for physician services if possible.
All athletes must present their Provincial Health Care Insurance
number and emergency contact information when registering for
an appointment with a Physician or upon arrival at a hospital.
All athletes from Quebec or international students may be required
to pay for medical treatment rendered.
A physician will be on-site during CWUAA wrestling
competitions hosted by the University of Winnipeg.



Therapy
Services

Limited therapy services are available, with an appropriate referral
outlining the injury description and treatment plan, by appointment
only.


Usage of the clinic will be granted to Certified Athletic Therapists
or Licensed Physiotherapists based on clinic availability.
Massage therapy is available on a fee for service basis by
appointment only.

Communication

Can-West injury and illness report form will be utilized when
applicable and will be sent with the Athlete and/or a member of the
visiting medical staff.
