BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK 6.1. Need for the study: The orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning depends upon the patients reasons for seeking the treatment .It is important to understand the main concern or the complaint which is driving the patients to seek the orthodontist treatment. The treatment plan is always aimed at addressing the main concern of the patient s hence it is of great significance for the orthodontist to understand the patient concern and about the awareness and understanding about his /her problem. The outcome of the treatment also depends on the treatment plan which is centered around the patients main concern hence this study was aimed at assessing at reasons and understanding of the concern of the patients to undergo orthodontic treatment. This study is also aimed at evaluating the motivating factors for the patients to undergo orthodontic treatment .This will help the orthodontistin understanding the current social esthetic trends and social norms about looks so that the effective treatment can be advocated in delivering the patient satisfying results. This study is also aimed at assessing the patients understanding and treatment procedures .this helps the orthodontist to understand the currently preferred appliances and procedures, which can be readily accepted by society. 2 6.2. Review of Literature: 1.ELECTIVE ORTHOGNATHIC TREATMENT DECISION MAKING: A SURVEY OF PATIENT REASONS AND EXPERIANCES. This study describes the factors associated with the patient’s decision to have or not orthognathic treatment .participants were patients aged over 16 years ,either making decision or had made their treatment choice 18-42 months prior to the study start date in 2003 .Of 138 approached ,61 participated .The thematic content analysis of interview transcripts found : reasons given for having orthognathic treatment were to improve the bite as well a gaining a more normal facial appearance ;most patients reported the service information was satisfactory ,but about half made negative comments ,with some reporting staff Communications made them feel worse; knowledge of orthodontic treatment they received ,which did not seem to be addressed by current practice . 2.DEVELOPMENT OF ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: PART 1-DEVELOPMENT OF A QUESTIONNAIR This study is about the development of a questionnaire to measure patient’s and parent’s expectations before orthodontic ,and to test the reliability and validity of measure .The sample consisted of 140 participants, 70 patients aged 12-14 years, who had been referred to orthodontic department .A questionnaire was devised using the key themes and concepts identified in open ended interviews .As a result ,10 questions, some with sub questions, were constructed using a visual analogue scale as the response format .this study provides a psychometrically validated measure of orthodontic expectations in 12-14-year –old patients and their parent in UK. 3.PATIENT’S EXPECTATION FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT :PART-2 FINDING FROM A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY. This study is a questionnaire survey of 100 patients and their primary care –givers Attending a new patient orthodontic consultant clinic, at a teaching hospital . Participants completed a valid questionnaire measure of orthodontic expectations that was tested for reliability and validity .Descriptive analysis of the response was Undertaken, and comparisons of children’s and parent’s expectations ,in addition to ethnicity ,were made. Information was collected from 12- 14 –year old patients and their parents with regard to orthodontic expectations reveals that patients and 3 parents share similar expectations of orthodontic treatment for most aspects of care although parents are more realistic in their estimation of duration of treatment and the initial visit. The expectations of patients differ from those of their parents with regard to dietary and drink restriction in relation to orthodontic treatment .Ethnicity significantly influences expectations of orthodontic treatment, and this may relate to differences in patients and their parents assessed outcome of care. 4. A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF TEENAGERS DECISIONS TO UNDERGO ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT WITH FIXED APPLIANCES. The aim of the study was to describe thoughts and values influencing young people choices to undergo orthodontic treatment .Twenty eight patients(11 boys),aged 13-19 years ,at an orthodontic clinic in the western part of Sweden participated .Open ,taped interviews ,lasting about 1 hour ,were conducted with each subject and analyzed by the grounded theory method .five descriptive categories .each related to several sub categories ,were generated n the analysis and labeled : being like every one ;being diagnosed; focusing on the mouth; obeying social norms and forced decision making . 5. THE DEVELOPMENT OF PATIENT –CENTERED MEASURE OF THE PROCESS AND OUTCOME OF COMBINED ORTHOGNATHIC TREATMENT. The aim of the study was to development of a patient centered measure of the process and outcome of combined orthodontic and orthognathic care .Identification of relevant dimensions through qualitative methods ,designs of form ,specific reliability ,reliability and validity the sample comprised patients who had received combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment . Twenty six participants took part in four focus group meetings. Thirty subjects took part in a pilot study to test the properties of the questionnaire. A patient based measure of the process and outcome of combined orthodontic and orthognathic treatment has been developed. 4 6.3. Objectives of the study: 1. To evaluate the patients expectations for seeking orthodontic treatment. 2. To develop a questionnaire to assess the reasons of the patients for seeking orthodontic treatment. 3. Assessing the most common reasons for seeking orthodontic treatment by survey method. 7. MATERIAL & METHODS: 7.1. Source of data: 1.The data is collected by questionnaire method from 500 patients coming to the department of orthodontics, Rajarajeswari Dental college & hospital ,Bangalore. . 2.
