By Calvin, Joseph, Peter and Sophie
ACTIVE, DORMANT AND EXTINCT
•
An active volcano is a volcano that is erupting or can erupt at any moment.
•
A dormant is a volcano that will not erupt for a while.
•
An extinct volcano is a volcano that has not erupted for 10,000 years and will not erupt
again.
HOW VOLCANOES ERUPT
•
Sometimes the magma floats to the surface. Or…
•
The pressure from the exsolved gases in the magma rises. Or…
•
The injection of a new batch of magma into an already filled magma chamber.
•
These are the most common reasons for a volcano erupts.
HOW THEY AFFECT LIVES
•
Violent eruptions and shaking destroys homes.
•
Gas waves given off by the volcano can get into peoples lungs.
•
Ash is bad for planes because the ash erodes the compressor reducing efficiency.
MOUNT ST. HELENS
•
Mount St. Helens is in Washington. Mount St. Helens is a volcano that has been laying
inactive for 120 years before the eruption. The majority of people died because of
poisonous gasses. The volcanic ash given off from the volcano circled the world and
affected many plane journeys around the world.
