high DSL availability – piecewise highly attractive!
local networks mostly using 100 Mbps
QoS generally supported by IP-Infrastructure
Power over LAN is available or ready to use
• Networking-Giant „pushing“ IP-Telephony into the market
– even non IT-specialists are becoming familiar with IP-Telephony
– IP-Telephony is considered technically mature
• Even traditional PBX manufacturers feel the power and offer VoIP or IPTelephony solutions.
• IP-Telephony: even weak market, strong growth rates

Good reasons for IP-Telephony
•Price (TCO)
•Rapid implementation
•User friendly
•Expandable
Only one type of wiring!
• Highly attractive for the set-up
of new sites
• Substantially smaller system
and no need for patch panels
• „Add, Move and Changes“ no
change of configuration in case
of relocation
6
Administration
• Administration from wherever
an IP connection is available.
• Clear responsibility – only one
person responsible for voice
and data.
• Administration can be
provided internally or by an
external service provider.
• In general very short
response times.
7
Immediate Savings
• Only ONE network
• Maintenance, cabling, support, administration,
“adds / moves / changes” within minutes.
• Native IP solution, no additional ISDN board or
CSTA module needed.
• Implementation step-by-step
• soft migration to the new platform
• no service interruption
• reduced risk
• experiences exchange of among the users
• Space requirements
• Little space needed, no patch panels, high flexibility
• Reduced software cost
• Central PBX software (CTI, UMS, ...) can be used everywhere
8
Immediate Savings
• Reduced calling cost
• Phone number portability, roaming within the entire campus,
SOHO & branch office solution available
• Outbound call management
• Unified messaging
• Telephone conferences
• Small branch offices
• Centralised call management
• Savings on ISDN-connections
• Internal call free of charge
• Redundancy PBX at the central site
• Reporting, billing, cost management

Decision criteria: IP-Telephony
• Standardised interfaces and protocols secure own
financial investment.
• Ease of scalability.
• For a high degree of availability watch out for the
basis of System.
• Single responsibility for voice and data
• Verify eventually upcoming requirements:
e.g. for redundancy, SOHO- connections and service
features.
Comparison VoIP-Protocols
Signalisation is realised with two competing methods::
• H.323 by the ITU
• SIP by the IETF
 What are the essential differences?
21
Comparison VoIP-Protocols
H.323
• Standardised by International Telecommunication Union
• Umbrella-Standard: contains plenty of sub standards for
specific jobs, such as:
• H.225 – signalling,
• H.235 – security,
• H.450 – service features, ...
• Specification is:
•
•
•
•
accurate: resulting in high compatibility
comprehensive: designed for various scenarios
stable: many parts already tested in ISDN solutions
complex: ASN.1 - not text based

23
Comparison VoIP-Protocols
• H.450 already today containing more service features than
a typical ISDN connection.
• H.450 includes PBX service features, which have to be implemented
on a proprietary basis for a legacy PBX.
-> Secure investment
• Service features of a PBX, such as:
• waiting loop, secretary-function, switch centre,
• LDAP-database connections, on-hold music
• Voice mail, CTI and UMS
are being realised on additional standards, using H.450 as basis.
A modern IP based PBX offers as many service features as a ISDN-PBX,
but without having the need for any proprietary enhancements.
24
Service features H.323
Example:
• Basic features, Call Completion Busy Subscriber, conference,
announcement, partner functions, waiting loop with individual
messages, waiting music, access control
• Phone book via LDAP, phone number identification, different ringing
tones, multiple registrations
• HTML configuration, update server, Roll-out-Tool, CAPI, TAPI, XML
• Location concept, redundancy, SOHO-connections, ...
H.323 makes sense for professional PBX‘s. This is where
compatibility and stability combined with a high requirement
for service features.
25
But what means ... ?
26
Comparison VoIP-Protocols
SIP
•
•
•
•
Session Initiation Protocol
Standardised by Internet Engineering Task Force
Current RFC 3261, which now makes RFC 2534 obsolete
More than 40 additional RFC‘s are defining SIP – daily new
are added.
• Some functions are solved in different RFC ‘ s ìn
different ways.
• Text based, developed out of HTTP
• The Specification is simple to implement
27
Comparison VoIP-Protocols
SIP
• Relatively simple solutions can be implemented fast
• Functionality of a PBX is too complex for being
controlled with text based messages.
• Large text blocks will be segmented and spend
bandwidth without need.
• RFC 3485 suggests to compress text based controls, no
difference to ASN.1 compression according H.323
• … which makes the controls unreadable and the SIP´s
big advantage is gone!
28
Comparison VoIP-Protocols
SIP’s field of application:
• VoIP for Internet Service Provider
• As of today usage makes sense only for private users
• Emergency call (USA 911) and call-tracing not possible
• DSL-connections without telephone contract not possible
• Peer-to-Peer connections such as
• Messaging Systems
• SIMPLE – SIP for Instant Messaging
• User don‘t need to be online permanently
• Extension for Presence
• Missing service features for professional PBX‘s

VoIP Gateways in general
All Gateways are characterised through it’s high stability:
•
Resistant steel housing
•
Moving parts such as fan or hard disks strictly omitted
•
A specially for VoIP designed operating system reduces the risk of
instabilities caused through 3rd vender software

Solution - Soft migration
• Instead of changing the complete PBX, the existing PBX can be step by
step extended with VoIP equipment up to the total replacement of the
new technology.
• No change is necessary on the existing configuration of the legacy PBX,
by inserting the VoIP gateways into the already installed ISDN trunk
line.
• Small investments at the begin and limited risk during first tests.
• Staff can be educated step by step.

• ISDN trunk bypassed to the

• Standby PBX automatically logs
on to the active PBX - but
doesn’t accept any registrations
as long as the active PBX is
available.
• All user data will be replicated
continuously.
• As soon as the active PBX fails,
the standby PBX takes over all
registrations.

Location concept
• Central Administration
• Numbering plan common or separate per location being
selected by prefix.
• Locations remain functional, even is the underlying IP
connection fails.
• Multi registration on different innovaphone PBX
• Grouping on top of multi registration (e.g. depart. calls)
• Least Cost Routing - via Prefix into a different city
network (z.B. „802“ „0“ into Tokyo net)
• Central side can be used a redundant Standby System
for another location.
Multi registration
•
•
•
•
User can be registered on various terminals simultaneously
… is reachable with own number at all terminals
… is using the phone as from the “own” terminal
… configurable feature as well for the number of
registrations
• Various user can be registered on a single terminal
• This realises indirect login and logout in groups,
good for front-desk or support hotline
