The preferred minimum entry qualification is an approved undergraduate Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7 or 8), which includes appropriate subject content knowledge to teach school subjects in the Intermediate Phase (including grade 7 of the Senior Phase). Students registering for the PGCE (IP) qualification from 2016 will be required to have subjects in their undergraduate degree that will enable them to teach two official languages; and two of mathematics, natural sciences and technology, social sciences and life sciences. The required subjects should be at first year level. This means to gain entry to the PGCE (IP) programme, students need to have two official languages in their undergraduate degree (2 of English or English Language and Linguistics, Afrikaans, isiXhosa or any other official language). In terms of the other two subjects required, we take a broad view. Included in brackets below are the kinds of cognate subjects that would be acceptable for each of the school subjects listed below: Mathematics (e.g. Mathematics, Economics, Accountancy, Statistics, Psychometrics in Psychology, Chemistry, Physics etc.) Life Skills (a combination of Psychology and Human Movement Sciences or Art or Music (HAM and Music and the Brain would also be regarded as sufficient for music) or Drama etc.) Social Sciences (a combination of some of these subjects Geography, Geology, History, Classics, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Studies, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science etc.) Natural Sciences (e.g. Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Human Movement Studies etc.) Students who do not have language or maths orientated subjects in their undergraduate degree will be given permission to carry additional modules in these areas running concurrently with the PGCE programme. However, a student may not exceed two additional modules. Should you have any questions with regards to the entrance requirements, or would like to know if you qualify, please contact the PGCE (IP) coordinator Bev Moore ([email protected]).
