Germersheim Distribution
Center Opens in Germany

The Exchange distribution center in Germany is relocating
from Giessen to Germersheim Feb. 1. The new center creates
a Logistics Center of Excellence with the Defense Logistics
and Defense Commissary agencies in conjunction with U.S.
Army Europe and U.S. Army Installation Management
Command. This will make support for America’s Warfighters
quicker and more efficient.
The Exchange expects to avoid nearly $800,000 in
transportation costs annually with this relocation as inventory
is closer to service members and their families, reducing
mileage and transportation costs and increasing speed to
market. Also, the proximity to the Rhine River and Port of
Germersheim adds flexibility and reduces replenishment
costs – savings that will ultimately result in additional support
of military communities around the world.
Since the 1960s, merchandise was shipped to Exchanges
across Europe and the Middle East from the Giessen
Distribution Center. Logistic leadership were on hand as the
final operations came to a close to thank Giessen associates
for their years of dedicated service. Some local associates are
relocating to Germersheim, while others have decided to stay
in Giessen or retire from the Exchange.
The move from roughly 1.2 million square feet of space at
Giessen to 420,000 square feet in Germersheim is being
offset by more frequent deliveries of smaller shipments.
The new and improved JDA Warehouse Management System
further optimizes warehouse operations while minimizing
space constraints.
Today, the Logistics Center of Excellence is the heart of the
U.S. military’s efforts to deliver crucial support to Soldiers,
Airmen, Marines, Sailors and their families across Europe and
to warriors downrange.
More photos, video and an update on the grand opening
ceremony will be added later this month.
