Constitution
This Constitution sets out the structure and function of the student organization described herein.
The document describes the organization’s management and governance, including the rights,
responsibilities, and powers of members and officers.
Article I: Name and Affiliation
The name of this organization shall be Educational Leadership Doctoral Fellows, being
composed of matriculated students in the Doctoral Program in Educational and Policy
Leadership, a program which is housed in the Department of Teaching, Literacy, and Leadership
in the School of Education, Health and Human Services at Hofstra University.
Article II: Purpose
The Educational Leadership Doctoral Fellows club has two purposes: 1) to develop and sustain a
sense of community among doctoral students in the program and 2) to support their development
as educational leaders and practitioner researchers in ways that supplement and enrich their
traditional coursework.
These opportunities may include, but are not limited to, 1) a Doctoral Research Symposium
where students present their research to an audience of faculty and peers; 2) an annual Doctoral
Dinner to recognize student accomplishments and particularly those who have completed all
requirements for the Ed.D.; 3) a Leadership Forum where students have the opportunity to meet
with researchers and/or noted educational leaders to discuss current policies and leadership
practice; 4) a program to support student participation in national professional research
organizations (UCEA and AERA).
Article III: Membership Eligibility and Privileges
Membership in the Educational Leadership Doctoral Fellows is open to all matriculated students
in the Ed.D. Program in Educational and Policy Leadership. All members shall be entitled to
vote, hold office, participate in discussion, attend events, and benefit from the organization’s
activities and sponsored services.
Article IV: Governance
Section 1: Faculty Advisor
A full-time faculty member from the Ed.D. Program in Educational and Policy
Leadership shall serve as the Fellows’ faculty advisor.
Section 2: Executive Board
The Educational Leadership Doctoral Fellows shall be governed by an Executive Board
as described in this section. At an annual meeting held in September of each year,
members of the Society will elect Board members for two-year terms.
The following officers shall constitute the board:

President: Responsible for the overall functioning of the Society. Responsible for
Society program development and coordination. Presides at Society meetings and
events. Creates materials to be disseminated at meetings. Approves publicity and
advertisements. Appoints committees as needed. Completes annual report and
presents to Society membership.
o Vice President: Assumes presidential duties in the absence of the President.
Assists President as needed. Recruits new members and renews existing
membership. Coordinates publicity for Society meetings and events and
communicates with Society members events through e-mail and other means.
o Secretary/Treasurer: Maintains official records of Society. Takes minutes at
meetings and distributes these to Society members. Maintains membership
records and monetary records of the Society. Handles all Society financial
transactions.
Article V: Meetings
At least one general membership meeting shall be held each fall and spring semester. Meetings
may be called at such times and places as the Executive Board determines. All Society members
must be notified in advance as to the time, place, and purpose of meetings. At least one
Executive Board meeting shall be held each semester. Meetings of the Executive Board shall be
called by the President.
Article VI: Amendments
This Constitution may be amended at any meeting of the membership by a vote of two-thirds of
the members present, provided that one-month notice of the meeting has been given prior to the
time of voting.
Article VII: Assets on Dissolution
No part of the net income, revenue, and grants of the Society shall devolve on any member or
private individual (except that reasonable compensation may be paid for services rendered in
connection with one of more of the Society’s purposes). No member or private individual shall
be entitled to share in the distribution of any part of the assets of the Society on its dissolution.
In the event of such dissolution, the Society’s assets, after payment of debts and obligations,
shall be transferred in accordance with Hofstra University regulations. If no dissolution
regulations exist, funds shall be transferred to an organization with tax exemption for charitable
uses. The organization will be designated by the final governing body of the Society.
