Role of the Clinical Pharmacist as a Catalyst for Appropriate Antibiotic Decision Making
Monday, December 5, 2011 • 5:30 PM- 8:00 PM • New Orleans Marriott
A Symposium conducted at the 46th ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition
Background
Community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) and acute bacterial skin and skin
structure infections (ABSSSI) lead to significant patient morbidity and mortality, and pose
a major economic burden to the healthcare system. Based on current evidence, achieving
optimal patient, bacteriologic, and economic outcomes depends on:
• Effective diagnosis and determination of individual risk factors for resistant
organisms and
• Selecting the most effective empiric antibiotic based on local data and current
clinical evidence, including appropriate use of newer agents
As integral members of the clinical team and key hospital committees, health-system
pharmacists are in a unique position to take a leadership role in educating other
healthcare professionals, establishing evidence-based clinical pathways, and setting
standards for optimal patient care and medication use for these serious infections.
Learning Objectives
After participating in this live knowledge-based activity, pharmacists should be able to:
• Develop an evidence-based approach for management of patients with CABP
that is based on current clinical evidence, quality measures (eg, CMS) and practice
guidelines, and that ensures optimal use of all available antibiotics.
• Develop an evidence-based approach for management of patients with ABSSSI
that is based on current clinical evidence and practice guidelines, and that ensures
optimal use of all available antibiotics.
• Recommend strategies and programs that foster appropriate use of antibiotics and
address CMS and other quality measures.
