The ICLN/M will be responsible for forming a link between the clinical unit and the Infection Control
Team. This will ensure the provision of the best practice in patient care in relation to infection control
needs. This will be achieved by assigning a portion of clinical time to infection control (in the designated
unit/s).
Duties and Associated activities for ICLN/M:
The following duties are additional to the substantive’s RN/RM Level 1 Job & Person Specifications but
are not confined to:
Increasing staff awareness of prevention and control of infections and acting as a resource within
clinical practice areas. Work with unit staff to improve the quality of patient care related to
infection control practices.
Provision of education in relation to infection control to the nursing, midwifery, medical, allied
health staff & others of clinical units.
Providing effective communication between the designated clinical unit and the infection control
team.
Collaborating with the infection control team to enhance and assist in the prevention and
management of infection control by:
Implementation and evaluation of an effective infection surveillance system within the
clinical unit (i.e. hand hygiene audits, Central line audits).
Provision of accurate reports/information regarding potential or actual infection control
problems. Attending Infection Control Link Nurse study days conducted by the
Department of Human Services as required.
Providing a regular summary of their activities to the Department of Human Services.
