BRAZIL ECOTOURISM VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AND REPORTS Summary In August/September 1998 I was a volunteer for the USAID-sponsored nongovernmental organization ACDI-VOCA www.acdivoca.org in two locations in central Brazil: in Juara Municipality in Mato Grosso province and in/near the capital territory of Brasilia. In Juara, a huge (8,770 square mile) municipality along the Juara River, a northward flowing tributary of the Amazon in Mato Grosso State, local authorities wanted advice on improving their options to become involved in ecotourism. I dealt with general marketing issues, with capital city issues, and in the rural areas, with small private operators interested in river lodges and trips, families interested in on-farm tourism, and indigenous tribal groups considering opening their community to visitors. I provided conceptual design for a proposed capital city nature park. I analyzed a specific project proposal to develop a small ecotourism company (“Happy Tour”) and visited agri-rural tourism areas near Brasilia, the historic community of Pirenopolis, Brasilia National Park, Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, and Alta Paraiso to provide observations on opportunities for ecotourism development and possible involvement of cooperatives.
