Control Means
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Ensure all working bee helpers are
aware of hazards associated with
tasks they are carrying out
Wearing of appropriate PPE
(personal protective equipment)
such as gloves when handling
timber, safety glasses & hearing
protection when mowing lawns,
enclosed shoes or non-slip boots,
sunscreen, hat and long sleeves
when working outside, insect
repellant if required.
“Take 5” principle adopted when
commencing a new task. Stop,
think and plan for any new task,
taking into account any potential
hazards associated with that task
Any tasks associated with working
at heights (ie cleaning gutters) or
electrical work must be carried out
by appropriately licensed &
experienced personnel. Permits
must be completed for working at
heights.
Any task involving manual handling
must be assessed prior to
commencing the task and
appropriate controls implemented
such as two person lift, using
trolleys or other means of lifting
and carrying. General principals of
manual handling need to be
observed ie lift close to the body,
bend the knees, turn the feet do not
twist the body, share the load.

As above, plus…
Wear gloves to protect hands from
splinters, blisters and to minimize
vibration injuries
Isolate area around activity to
ensure observers or those in close
proximity will not be injured
Work with feet apart to minimize
risk of striking legs with block
splitter
Correct stance to minimize sprains
or strains
Wear eye protection to prevent eye
injuries from timber chips
Use correct tools ie block splitter
for splitting large logs
1. As above plus….
2. Wear leather gloves to prevent
bruising and hand impact
injuries
3. Wear enclosed sturdy shoes to
minimize foot injuries if bricks
etc are dropped
4. Use correct tools ie bolster
and lump hammer to pull apart
and remove structure

B = Likely: Will probably occur
C = Possible: Might occur at sometime

Consequence
1 = Catastrophic: Death or permanent disability
2 = Major: Long term illness or serious injury
3 = Moderate: Medical attention and or incapacity
4 = Minor: First aid treatment
