SEMESTER – V Paper V: Industrial Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Theory- Full Marks: 100 Group-A Unit I : Petroleum Industries [Marks 30] (1) Composition of Petroleum, introduction to crude oil, exploratory methods, oil reservoirs, Evaluation of oil stocks, Physical properties of a petoleum oil- Specific Heat, Latent Heat, Critical point & other properties, coefficient of Expansion, Detonation Characterisitics. (2) Introduction to processing and Refinery Products. (3) Refinery and Distillation Processes : Boiling Range of Stock, Arrangement of Towers, Flow diagram and operating conditions, Vacuum distillation, Desulphurisation, Refining by adsorption, Preliminary ideas of treating equipments and extraction processes, Dewaxing. (4) Meaning of terms such as - Pour point depresenats, drag reducers, viscosity reducers, ignition point, flash point, octane number, doctor solution types of hydrocarbon fuels and their characteristics. (5) Basic ideal about the following operations with respect to process, mechanism, catalysts used and applications:Cracking - Catalytic cracking, Hydrocracking, Isomerization, Reforming, Isomerization, Alkylation.Sulphur, hydrogen, petroleum coke and nitrogen compounds from petroleum. (6) Various catalysts used in petrochemical industry, preparation structure, applications and selectivity. Unit II - Unit process [Marks 20] Unit processes such as, Nitration, Halogenation, Sulfonationetc with Engineering Basics and Commercial Applications. Group – B : Industrial & Environmental pollution [ Marks 20] 1. Industrial & Environmental pollution - An overview Pollution and pollutants-sources, types and consequences. Air and Water pollution, solid wastes. Imbalance in atmosphere, Hydrosphere and Lithosphere. Industrial Effluents. Industrial Episodes of hazards and pollution: Minamata, Love canal, Flixborough, Bhopal , Chernobyl. 2. Water as Environmental Resources: Hydrological cycle. Water quality, criteria of pollution suspended solids; physical chemical and biological; dissoloved solids-organics, Bio-degradable and Nonbiodegradable; Inorganic heavy metal and others. Assement of water quality- sampling and analysis- Dissoloved oxygen(DO), Bio- chemical oxygen demand ( BOD), Chemical oxygen demand(COD), Industrial methods for total organic carbon(TOC), Colorimetric and gas chromatographic methods; Analysis of toxic inorganic pollutants- as fluoride, Hg, Cd, Pb, Sb, Coliform test. Drinking water standards (India and WHO), Industrial discharge Standards -Minimum National Standards (MINAS). 3. Waste water treatment methods: Physical chemical and biological , Primary, secondary and tertiary, Removal of Biodegradable Organics- Activated Sludge Methods , Fixed Film methods- Trickling Filter, Rotating Biological Contractor(RBC), Design criteria of Bioreactor, Pond Treatment and soil treatment systems. Bioremediation. Concepts of recycling and zero discharge industries. 4. Air composition and quality: Chemical and photochemical reactions in the atmosphere. Ozone formation and depletion, green house effect. Air pollution criteria: Particulates, SOx, NOx, CO, HC's (Hydrocarbons) and others, Sampling and analysis of air pollutants. Controll of Air Pollution- Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), Precipitators, collectors. Scrubbers. Vehicular pollution and control-Holistic approach. Real time analysis and monitoring of combustion and emission. Sound pollution and intensity levels, control. Group – C: Organic Chemistry Unit-1 [Marks 30] (Marks 20) 1. Conformation and Reactivity (a) Acyclic Compounds : (12) I) Conformational nomenclature -- eclipsed, staggered, gauche and anti, dihedral angle, torsion angle. Conformational analysis-- energy barrier of rotation, relative stability of conformers on the basis of steric effect, dipole-dipole interation, hydrogen bonding. Examples -- ethane, propane, n-butane, 1,2dihaloethane and 1,2diols. II) Stereochemical studies of 2 reactions. (b) I) Alicyclic Compounds : Bayer Strain theory, conformational analysis of substituted cyclohexane. (8) cyclohexane, mono and di- II) Stereochemical studies of substitution & elimination reaction in substituted cyclohexane compounds. Unit-II (Marks 10) 1. Polynuclear hydrocarbons (5) Synthesis of naphthalene ( Haworth synthesis), anthracene ( Haworth synthesis, application of Diels - Alder reaction), Phenanthrene (Bardhan-Sengupta synthesis). Reactivity -- nitration, sulphonation, halogenation and oxidation. 2. Nitrogen compounds (5) Amines (aliphatic and aromatic) -- Preparation, separation and identification of primary, secondary and tertiary amines. Formation of diazonium ion and diazocoupling reaction, Sandmayer reaction. Aromatic nitro compounds --- reduction and nitration. SEMESTER – V Paper VI: Practical & Sessional Full Marks : 100 Unit I- Fuels& Furnace Lab [Marks 40] Determination of Flash Point, Fire Point , Kinetic Viscosity of oil, Proximate analysis of coal, Calorific value of Solid Fuel. Unit II- Unit Process Laboratory [Marks 30] One example of: Nitration, Oxidation, Partial reduction, Esterification, Polymerization. Unit III: Materials testing and characterization-II [Marks 30] Ultraviolet, Visible and Infrared spectroscopy study to characterize materials, Steady state and time resolved spectroscopy, Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), Semiconductor Characterization system. SEMESTER – VI Paper VII: Industrial Chemistry Theory - Full Marks : 100 Unit I - Heavy Inorganic chemicals [Marks 40] i) Manufacture of Sulphuric Acid, Hydrochloric acid, Nitric acid, Phosphoric acid. ii) Soda ash by Solvay & Modified solvay process. Chloro-alkali industrial products- Caustic soda, Chlorine, Calcium & Sodium hypochlorite, bleaching powder, Chloramine-T. iii) Fertilizer Industries: Phosphorus Fertilizers - phosphorus, phosphoric acid, ammonium phosphate, superphosphate, triple superphosphate, Nitrogen Fertilizers - Urea, other fertilizers like ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate. Inorganic disinfectant chemicals. iv)Industrialcarbon-carbon blacks, manufacture of graphite and gas carbon. Outline Methods for Manufacture of: Lime & Plaster-of paris, Silicon, Calcium carbide, silicon Carbide,Sodium Chloride, Sodium Sulphate, Sodium sulphite, Sodium thiosulphate Note: Physico-Chemical Principles, Major equipments, material of construction to be emphasized in all the above topic. Unit II: Petrochemicals [Marks 30] Crackers-isolation of different chemicals: i) C1 chemicals: Methanol, Formaldehyde, Chlorinated Methanes. ii) C2 ,C3 and C4 chemicals: Ethyl Chloride, Vinyl Chloride, Ethylene oxide, Ethylene Glycol, Ethanolamines, Acetaldehyde, Acetic acid, Isopropanol, Oxo-synthesis, Acrylonitrile. iii)Aromatic compounds- Production and isolation of BTX, monobasic and di-basic acid and its ester, Styrene, Napthalene, Linear Alkyl Benzenes and their sulphonates. . Unit III – Fine Chemicals [Marks 20] 1 .General idea about Fine chemicals 2. Overall aquaintance with the following Fine Chemicals& Pharmaceuticals: (i) Aromatic Chemicals used in Perfumary, Esters such as Amyl Acetates. (ii) Basic Drugs such as Anti-malarials, Anti-ambeobies, Analgesic and Anti-pyretic, Sulpha Drugs, Broad Spectrum Anti-biotics -Ampicelling, Chloromycetine. Unit IV – Surface coating & corrosion preventives [Marks 10] Industrial surface coating & corrosion preventives e.g, paints, varnishes, lacquers, thinners, solvents, Insecticides and Herbicides. SEMESTER – VI Paper VIII: Practical & Sessional Full Marks: 100 Group A:Practical & Sessional Unit I- Chemical Engineering Laboratory [Marks 30] 1)Study the Flow measurement :Venturimeter, Orifice meter, Pitot tube, Rotameter, Watermeter. 2) Double pipe Heat Exchanger: 3) Energy requirement for crushing / grinding operation 4) Temperature measurement set-up : Study of Temperature sensors (Mercury in glass, Bimetal, RTD, Thermistor, Thermocouple), Characteristics of RTD, Thermistor and Thermocouple, Study & calibration of temperature indicator and temperature transmitter, Study of Seebeck effect, Time constant of glass thermometer and bimetal thermometer . Time constant of RTD, Thermistor, Thermocouple. 5) Study the various kind of pressure gauge: Unit II - Statistics & Quality Control methods [Marks 30] Module 1: Probability Theory and Basic Theoretical Distributions Theory of probability: examples of simple applications- Concepts of Random Variables: Discrete & Continuous- Discrete Theoretical Distributions (Binomial, Poisson) – Continuous Distribution (Normal) - Chebyshev’s inequality. Module 2: Statistical Quality Control (SQC) Techniques of Control Charts- Control charts for Mean, Range, and Fraction defective, Number defective, Number of defects. Unit II: Presentation of Seminar [Marks 20] Topic for presentation will be different from the topic highlighted in the industrial/Plant visit report. Evaluation will be based upon the following points: (i) Contents; (ii) Mastery of the subject; (iii) Delivery & Gesture; (iv) Contact with Audience; (v) Handling of the questions. The presentation will be evaluated by one internal and the external examiner of the paper concerned.
