Preparing Your Wedding Liturgy
The following pages are taken from the Lectionary for Mass, and give the full text of the appointed
Scripture readings for a Wedding Mass. You will need to choose an Old Testament reading, a New
Testament reading, and a Gospel reading. Please remember that you can choose readers for only the first
two readings. The priest or deacon proclaims the gospel. Only Catholics may proclaim the readings at
Mass.

Notes for the Reader
• readings are proclaimed from the ambo (pulpit), located on the left side of the sanctuary when
looking at the altar.
• readings are proclaimed from the Lectionary, the Church’s ritual book, not from photocopied sheets.
The Lectionary will be marked for your reading. As a backup, please make a note of the lectionary
number and/or page number of your reading. Readings contained in this resource are exact copies of the
Lectionary pages, so you can become familiar with the page layout.
• remember to read more slowly and deliberately than you would in normal conversation. Our church
building is a large room with its own acoustical requirements. Reading too quickly or too softly will make
the text unintelligible.
• The customary introduction/conclusion of a reading are as printed: “A reading from the book/letter...”
All Old and New Testament readings conclude with a few seconds of silence, followed by “The Word of
the Lord.” Please note that the summary statement in smaller print is not read, nor is the Bible citation
(chapter and verse numbers).
